Applicants must meet the following age requirements:

  • Be a United States citizen at the time of filing of the Formal Application (Oral Interview Phase).
  • Be at least 21 years of age, but not more than 35 years of age by the Preliminary Application deadline on April 1, 2019. The following exceptions apply:
    • U.S. military veterans can exceed the maximum age limit by the number of years of active military service (limit to 10 years of active military service) with an honorable discharge;
    • Auxiliary police officers as defined in 65 ILCS 5/3.1-30-20 with at least five years of service and under the age of 40;
  • Age limitations do not apply to:
    • Applicants previously employed as a police officer in any properly constituted municipal police department in the United States; or
    • Applicants previously employed as a sworn police officer with the Illinois State Police; or
    • Applicants who have served as a deputy under Section 3-6008 of the counties code (attended a law enforcement academy - excludes corrections and court officer);
    • AND otherwise meet the necessary training requirements of a police officer established by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

Police officer applicants must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED) AND a minimum of 60 hours of college credit or its equivalent as noted:

  • Equivalent of 30 hours of college semester hours for each 12 full months of non-disability service as a full time police officer with another police department in the United States;
  • Equivalent of 30 college semester hours for each full 12 consecutive months of active military duty for the United States, honorably discharged, and not convicted by court martial or other legal process for disobedience to orders or crimes in the military which are the substantive equivalent of the crimes set forth in Chapter 2, Section 1(D) of the Rules and Regulations of the Mount Prospect Board of Fire and Police Commissioners;
  • Equivalent of 10 college semester hours for each 12 full months of employment as a Mount Prospect Community Service Officer;
  • Equivalent of 30 college semester hours by demonstrating fluency (ability to read, speak, and understand) any language prevalent in the Mount Prospect Police service area, other than English, as determined by the most recent U.S. Census Bureau statistics. The BOFPC will be the sole judge of whether a language is prevalent in the Mount Prospect Police service area and whether fluency has been clearly demonstrated. The BOFPC may retain a testing agency to advise as to specific language prevalency and for standards and evaluation of fluency.

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of submission of the Preliminary Application. Upon hire, an applicant with a driver's license from another state must possess a valid Illinois Driver's License within 6 months of hire.
