Position Details

The City of Springfield is seeking individuals to participate in the Police Patrol Officer Lateral examination process.

Eligibility requirements:

• Must have graduated from a full-time certified police academy;
• Been employed a minimum of three (3) of the past five (5) years as a full-time police officer in a single jurisdiction in which the training and experience qualifies or would qualify the officer to become certified in the State of Illinois (the three years must be obtained by March 31, 2020);
• U.S. citizenship;
• High school graduate or GED;
• Uncorrected visual sharpness minimum 20/40, normal or mild color blindness or mild anomalous trichromat (red-green deficiency);
• Ability to meet and comply with the department's tattoo policy;
• No felony convictions or certain misdemeanors;
• The ability to pass all required phases of the examination;
• A driver's license at time of hire
• Valid FOID card within 12 months of hire. 

At the time of application, the candidate must provide certification of successful completion from a full-time certified police academy and a letter indicating employment dates as a police officer on the police department's letterhead.

The maximum age to take the written examination is 34 unless the individual meets one of the following exemptions under the Illinois Compiled State Statute:

1. Previous employment as a police officer or firefighter in the regularly constituted police or fire department of the municipality (65 ILCS 5/Article 10-1-7). "The municipality" is defined as the City of Springfield; or
2. Active duty service in the military (65 ILCS 5/Article 10-1-12).
