Entry-Level Police Officer Hiring Process

Hillside Police Department

Hillside, Illinois

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners of the Village of Hillside, Illinois is accepting applications for the position of police officer with the Hillside Police Department.

All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the Village of Hillside:

• U.S. citizenship or legally authorized to work in the U.S.;
• No felony convictions;
• High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent;
• Valid Illinois driver's license; 
• Minimum of 21 years of age (by October 19, 2026) -AND- must be UNDER 35 years of age as of date of hire, unless otherwise exempt by State Statute;
• Must meet the requirements of a background check;
• Must pass a medical, psychological and polygraph test;
• $30.00 non-refundable application processing fee;
• Application deadline is Monday, October 19, 2026 at 4:00 PM (CST);
• Participate in remote on-line written exam testing available from 9 AM on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 through Friday, October 30, 2026 at 4 PM.

Certified Candidates: An applicant who is/was a police officer in good standing with the law enforcement agency he/she is/was employed with and certified by the State certification board is eligible to be placed on a certified officer transfer eligibility list. 

• Certified officer transfer candidates ARE REQUIRED to take the written exam;
• Certified officer transfer candidates ARE REQUIRED to participate in the oral interview process.

To be eligible for the Certified Officer Transfer Eligibility List, you must meet the following requirements:

• Have been employed, whether currently or in the past, for at least two (2) years as a full-time, non-probationary, sworn law enforcement officer of a regular police department in any municipality, county, university or State law enforcement agency. 
• NOTE: Part-time certification does NOT meet this requirement.
• Must be in good standing with the agency in which they served.
• Ability to furnish upon request a copy of the following documents to the extent applicable: a resume, professional licenses, training certificates, naval or military serve board or discharge papers (DD-214/Copy 4), and documents confirming work experience. 

Preference Points will be awarded as determined by the Village of Hillside for the following only:

• Military Experience: Active-duty U.S. military service members with an un-redacted Honorable Discharge.  DD-214 must be submitted with application to qualify.
• Education: Applicants who have earned a Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in any field of study, must submit a copy of their diploma with the application to qualify.
