Position Details

The Civil Service Commission of the Village of North Riverside, Illinois is accepting appointment(s) to the position of Firefighter/Paramedic with the North Riverside Fire Department.

All Applicants Must Meet the Following Minimum Requirements established by the Village of North Riverside Civil Service Commission:

• At least 21 years of age and under 35 years of age at time of written examination, except per Illinois Statute 65 ILCS 5/0-1-7 and 5/10-1-12 of the Civil Service Act which provides in part, that the age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed as a full-time firefighter in a regularly constituted fire department of any municipality or fire protection district located in Illinois;
• U.S. Citizenship;
• No felony convictions and must be of good moral character;
• High school graduate or GED equivalent;
• Possess a valid driver's license with good driving record;
• Possess a valid Paramedic License from the Illinois Department of Public Health - (IDPH) (within three (3) months of hire as long as you have your Basic Operations Firefighter Certification (BOF); ******OR****** If you do not have your Basic Operations Firefighter Certification (BOF) you must possess a valid Paramedic License from the Illinois Department of Public Health - (IDPH) at time of hire (EMT-P license -OR- proof of enrollment in Paramedic program must be submitted with application);
• Present a valid CPAT card with Ladder Climb at the time of conditional employment offer, with an issue date within 12 months of the date of the Final Eligibility List -AND- CPAT card must also be valid at time of hire;
• Must successfully pass a written examination with a passing score of 70% or better;
• No residency requirements;
• Must successfully complete:
• oral interview
• background investigation
• medical examination
• drug testing
• polygraph
• psychological examination
• Complete Mandatory On-line Written Examination Testing available between Wednesday, July 29, 2026 and Friday, July 31, 2026;
• Pay a $20.00 non-refundable application processing fee. 

Preference Points will be awarded by the Village of North Riverside for the following:

• Military Experience: Applicants with a minimum of 1 year of active duty U.S. military service with an Honorable Discharge. Military Form DD-214 (indicating status of discharge) must be submitted with application to qualify.
• Education: Possess an Associate's Degree in the field of Fire Service or Emergency Medical Services from an accredited community or junior college –OR- a Bachelor's Degree in any field from an accredited college or university. A copy of the diploma and/or official transcripts must be submitted when requested to qualify.
