The Board of the Fire and Police Commissioners for the Village of Mokena is now accepting applications for the position of: Lateral Police Officer
Mokena is located 45 miles southwest of downtown Chicago in Will County. The Village of Mokena is a family-oriented community with many desirable amenities including excellent schools, beautiful parks, and open space. It is known for having a low crime rate and a professional and courteous police department of 35 full-time sworn officers.
New state of the art Police Facility (2024) equipped with a physical fitness training center, indoor firing range, defensive tactics room, simulator room, and large dining room with outdoor covered patio with grill.

You must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Applicants must be, or previously have been, full-time sworn officers of a regular police department in any Illinois municipality, county, university or State law enforcement agency provided they are certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board and have been with their respective law enforcement agency, as a full-time police officer, within the State for at least two (2) years from date of last hire at that agency.
- All accelerated entry process applicants must provide documentation to show their previous responsibilities and duties are similar to those of a Police Officer in the Village of Mokena. This will be accomplished through review of a combination of employee evaluations, past and current assignments, and training certificates. Applicants must provide documentation that they have fulfilled the requirements of the Illinois Police Training Act and are currently Illinois certified law enforcement officers.
- Accelerated entry applicants who meet these requirements and are selected for accelerated entry shall complete the entry process before an offer of employment.
Additional Requirements:
- Driver’s License: Must have a valid Driver’s License
- Age Requirements: Applicants must have attained their 23rd birthday by the last date of filing applications.
- Education: Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) AND have successfully achieved an Associate’s Degree or 60 credit hours towards a Bachelor’s Degree from an Accredited College or University.
- The minimum educational requirement may be waived if one or more of the following applies:
- The applicant is a Veteran and has served 24 months of honorable active duty in the United States Armed Forces and has not been discharged dishonorably or under circumstances other than honorable, OR
- The applicant has served for 180 days of active duty in the United States Armed Forces in combat duty, recognized by the Department of Defense and has not been discharged dishonorably or under any circumstances other than honorable.
- Character: Must have no felony convictions and possess good moral character suitable to the role of a law enforcement officer
- Testing: Must be able to participate and successfully complete all stages of the testing process.
- Residency: Must establish residency within 35-mile radius of the police station by the end of the probationary period.
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain a FOID Card (Firearms Owners Identification Card)
After being hired, the applicants will be required to successfully complete a field training program and 18-month probation period.
Lateral Entry Candidates who have been determined by the Commission to meet the aforementioned requirements will not be required to attend an orientation or take a written examination. For such candidates, the examination process consists of oral interviews, a background investigation, polygraph, psychological and medical examination.
