Position Overview:

The Director of Campus Safety is a strategic and operational leader responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing programs that protect the safety and security of students, staff, and district property. This role collaborates with district and building administration to ensure a safe learning environment; develops a comprehensive professional development plan for safety and support personnel; and co-leads with Winnetka Campus Principal /Assistant Superintendent in the creation, implementation, and maintenance of a district-wide Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) for all school sites. The Director works closely with Physical Plant Services and Technology to select, administer, and maintain security-related hardware and systems, and serves as the primary liaison between the district and external public safety agencies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or a related field preferred
  • Emergency management experience
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a police officer, facility security officer, or in a comparable security role
  • Experience in school security and safety training preferred
  • Experience in crisis management; investigation of individuals and/or incidents; and facility, personnel protection, and training
  • Experience with security technology systems (e.g., Raptor, access control, & video surveillance systems)
  • Able to author policies and standard operating procedures in alignment with  Emergency Operation Plans
  • Professional demeanor and ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, and community members
  • Executive presence with includes excellent written and verbal communication skills, public speaking, and budget experience.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to school safety and security
  • Knowledge of de-escalation strategies and the ability to lead and model de-escalation efforts
  • Proficiency with technical communication systems, programs, and equipment in both daily operations and emergencies
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to address concerns, de-escalate situations, and carry out decisions professionally
  • Skill in working with students and collaborating with parents and staff on disciplinary issues and situations affecting student safety
  • Ability to build and maintain positive, professional relationships with students and staff to support safe, productive learning environments and common areas
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate dignity and respect when interacting with students, staff, and community members
  • Commitment to staying current on best practices and procedures in school safety and security
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and accurate records related to investigations, sensitive information, and security matters
  • Proficiency with electronic devices and commonly used software, including security camera and access control systems, emergency/disaster planning and communication tools, student information systems, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace for Education, and other cloud-based applications; ability to learn new software with minimal guidance
  • Ability to prepare required safety and evacuation reports, including those required by the Illinois State Board of Education

Position Responsibilities:

Campus Security Department Management:

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate all Campus Security staff.
  • Plan and implement ongoing in-service training for security staff (e.g., non-violent conflict resolution, customer service).
  • Hold weekly meetings with campus security leads and regular department meetings.
  • Schedule and assign staff for daily operations, special events, and summer programs.
  • Oversee and approve electronic payroll and time-off requests for Campus Security staff.
  • Develop and monitor the annual safety and security budget in collaboration with administration.
  • Ensure that all security-related equipment (e.g., radios, cameras, attendance and visitor management systems) are in proper working order.
  • Maintain lost property and lost property reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

School and Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a liaison between the district and local, county, state, and federal police and fire officials.
  • Prepare agendas for and co-facilitate District Safety and Security Committee meetings.
  • Meet monthly, or as needed, with Campus Facilities Managers, the Athletic Director, Student Activities Coordinators, Performing Arts coordinators, Principals, and other appropriate staff to review building schedules, usage, and security needs.
  • Provide professional development for school staff on safety and security topics (e.g., behavioral threat assessment, active shooter response, ICS training, evacuation drills, the Standard Response Protocol, and the Standard Reunification Method).
  • Participate on the Support Staff Professional Development Committee.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to administration regarding school-day supervision and safety practices.
  • Assume responsibility for professional growth through participation in professional organizations, conferences, and advanced coursework.

Security Planning and Coordination:

  • Facilitate the annual review of the District Emergency Operations Plan with the Safety and Security Committee and local police and fire representatives to meet statutory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with all mandatory School Safety Drills:
  • Building Evacuation (Fire/Hazardous Materials/Bomb Threat)
  • Bus Evacuation
  • Severe Weather/Shelter in Place (Tornado)
  • Lockdown  Drill (Run, Hide, Fight) within the first 90 days of school
  • Coordinate, oversee, and document safety drills at all campuses, ensuring they are planned and conducted in collaboration with local Fire Department personnel in compliance with state requirements.
  • Visit all campuses and off-site district athletic facilities frequently to assess implementation of safety measures and identify areas for improvement.
  • Conduct annual security audits of all district facilities and present findings to the Safety and Security Committee.
  • Write and submit applications for safety and security grant opportunities.
  • Lead new safety and security initiatives (procedures, equipment, and facility improvements), coordinating with Physical Plant Services and Technology.
  • Oversee campus parking (including assignment of spaces) and campus traffic (including traffic plans for school days and special events, and related staff training).
  • Oversee the planning, logistics, and crowd control for large school events and athletic contests (before, during, and after school hours) at both campuses.
  • Oversee scheduling and security coverage for summer programs.
  • Respond, in collaboration with administration, to any threats reported through the district’s “Trev Tips” online reporting system.
