  • Starting: $79,605 - $111,447, depending on qualifications

    The Village of Kenilworth offers a comprehensive benefits package including:

    The schedule is 12-hour shifts that rotate every eight weeks, every other weekend off, and no permanent midnight shifts.

    Officers will be provided a firearm, body armor, uniforms and all other necessary equipment at Department's expense.

    The tuition reimbursement program is available after one year of employment.

    Attention Retired Laterals:

    • Retired officers will pay into Social Security, allowing career law enforcement the opportunity to earn additional Social Security benefits
    • The Village contributes 7% of salary to a 401a deferred compensation plan, upon completion of 1 year of service

Position Details

The Village of Kenilworth is seeking experienced, mature, and dedicated candidates to join its Police Department as a Police Officer.

Kenilworth is located approximately 17 miles north of downtown Chicago, and is the newest of the eight Chicago suburban communities fronting on Lake Michigan, commonly referred to as "the North Shore." Of the communities in the area, Kenilworth is the only one developed as a planned community. Along Lake Michigan and the Metra's Union Pacific North Line (the Kenilworth stop is across the street from the Police department). Kenilworth has a population of around 2,500 residents and is known for its historic character, residential charm, and high quality of life.

The Kenilworth Police Department exists to protect our citizens and to provide a secure environment in which to pursue a quality lifestyle. To do so, the Kenilworth Police Department strives to work with the citizens to identify and correct areas of concern to the community.

The goal of the Kenilworth Police Department is to continually improve the delivery of police services to the Village of Kenilworth.

The Police Department has a full kitchen, a locker room with shower facilities, a fitness room, and a firearms range that was updated in 2024.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications:

Applicants for lateral appointment to the position of police officer must meet the following minimum qualifications and requirements at the time of application:

  • State of Illinois Certification by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board with no more than forty (40) hours of training required by that Board for recertification, if necessary. 
    • Part-time certification as a law enforcement officer does not meet this requirement.
  • Prior law enforcement experience with an Illinois municipal police department for at least 6 months.
  • Individuals must be at least 21 years old.
  • Education - High school education or equivalent thereof and, (i) at least 60 semester (or equivalent trimester/quarter) credit hours at an accredited college or university or (ii) possess comparable work experience. 
  • Vision must be correctable to 20/40, and individuals must possess normal peripheral vision and the ability to distinguish colors.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Must agree to comply with all requirements of the position and possess the ability to pass all examinations and training requirements. 
  • Furnish upon request, a copy of the following:
    • Birth Certificate
    • High School diploma or G.E.D.
    • Transcripts and diplomas of higher learning
    • Training certificates
    • Naval or Military Service Board and Discharge Papers
    • Professional licenses
    • A resume
    • Documents confirming work experience
    • Employee evaluations

  • Reference and Credit Check
  • Pre employment Medical Examination: Physical Examination (including drug screen) and Psychological Examination
  • All Appointments are subject to a probationary period. 

Eligibility List (Lateral or Recently Retired):

  • Placement on any Eligibility List shall be based upon the relative excellence of the applicants.
  • In the event that prescreening identifies applicants, who have certain knowledge, skills and abilities ("KSA") or several KSA's that make those applicants more desirable for the position sought to be filled, the Panel may interview those applicants only for consideration.
