DESCRIPTION:

The Accreditation Specialist will facilitate the implementation of systems in accordance with accreditation and departmental policies with minimal supervision.

Under the direction of the Chief of Police, or designee, the Accreditation Specialist serves as coordinator and/or liaison in the following tasks:

  1. Assisting in researching changes in state statutes, judicial decisions, and federal law to recommend changes in standard operating procedures and policies.
  2. Regularly reviewing and revising accreditation standard proof submissions as necessary, ensuring compliance with Department and Village-wide quality assurance requirements. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following major duties and related tasks have been identified by the Chief of Police as being essential to the proper and effective performance of the position. Persons working in this position should be expected to perform all the following duties and tasks.

  1. Keeps current regarding trends and developments in police records theory, practice, and management, through appropriate educational programs, professional associations, and literature.
  2. Acts as the coordinator of policy development by suggesting areas of new policy development, reviewing, maintaining, and updating existing policy; identifies and corrects issues related to current policies.
  3. Maintains current information on accreditation standards, and the interpretation and application of accreditation standards through active participation with appropriate accreditation commissions and professional associations.
  4. Facilitates Department interaction with CALEA and maintains accreditation compliance. Serves as Department liaison to CALEA as well as with Accreditation Personnel of other local, county, and state agencies. Keeps abreast of the accreditation process, including proposed changes or amendments to the standards, transition policies, or process changes. Evaluates the impact of these changes on the agency.
  5. Maintains accurate up-to-date and archived accreditation files by ensuring the timeliness of reports and inspections (monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.) Monitors records and systems and collaborates with agency personnel with regards to maintaining accreditation standards.
  6. Attend meetings and/or committees as directed by the Chief of Police or as needed to address Department interests. 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor Degree; 3-5 years of experience in the police accreditation process, or equivalent years of training and experience will be considered.
  • Advanced knowledge of law enforcement education, investigations, police administration, planning and organization are desirable.
  • Advanced knowledge of police records management and operations.
  • Requires organization, scheduling, time-management and written, verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare reports, analyses, policies, and recommendations is required.
  • Knowledge of department personnel policy, rules, regulations, general orders, and procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and set and achieve challenging goals.
  • Use a computer and all applicable software programs. Power DMS experience is preferred.
  • Utilize substantial language, mathematic, and reasoning skills to perform job functions.
  • Must possess a valid Illinois Driver's License. 

SCHEDULING:

This position involves regularly scheduled hours up to 30 hours a week, normally Monday through Friday. In addition, hours may be extended in the event of emergency, disaster, employee shortage, workload, or work-in-progress.
