Position Details

The Gurnee Police Department is seeking a motivated, energetic, service-oriented individual to join its team as the Public Education Specialist.

This is a full time, non-sworn position responsible for the implementation and delivery of a variety of school-based, public safety education programs.  This position will also have the responsibility to initiate and promote wellness initiatives for the Gurnee Police Department.

The ideal candidate will have experience in:

• Working with K-8 school age children creating and presenting education programs related to drug / alcohol education; child personal safety and Stranger Danger programs; bullying prevention; self-esteem building; proper use of 911; violence prevention; gang activity; and crime prevention.
• Designing and implementing strategies for the promotion of physical and behavioral wellness for Police Department employees.  A vested interest in wellness related activities, physical fitness, and a commitment to ongoing knowledge of current trends in workplace wellness and mental health initiatives is critical.  Experience developing and implementing a peer support model for public safety personnel.
• Working with School Resources Officers and school officials in emergency crisis planning and building security matters. 
• Working with School Resources Officers to provide information and contacts with community agencies which offer assistance to youths and their families such as mental health clinics, drug treatment centers, and other related service providers.
• Developing a network of wellness support providers and coordinating resources for critical incident stress debriefings.  
• Creating and maintaining a budget for a program area

Desirable Qualifications and Minimum Requirements:

• The ideal candidate will have the skill and ability to effectively lead, instruct, and teach others.
• Requires a high degree of interaction with school age children, peers, and adult audiences. 
• Effective public speaking skills are critical.
• Strong organizational and time management skills required.
• Proficiency in using Microsoft office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Additional experience using graphics software helpful.
• Additionally, the ideal candidate will be a motivated, creative self-starter with the ability to manage multiple projects including program development, budgeting, implementation, goal setting, and evaluation.  Serves as primary point of contact for department wellness initiatives.
• Other desirable qualifications include D.A.R.E Officer and/or school resource officer experience; community relations experience; prior experience with wellness program design and implementation; bilingual skills helpful but not required.  
• Requires a valid driver’s license with safe driving history and previous sworn law enforcement experience or comparable position performing similar duties as outlined.
