Position Details

The Village of Leland, Illinois is currently accepting applications from qualified individuals for the position of Police Officer (Part-Time), as well as Auxiliary Police Officer (Voluntary Part-Time).

We have an on-going process of accepting applications.

The applicant for Police Officer (Part-Time) will perform duties to include but not limited to: 

• Enforcing traffic, criminal laws and local ordinances
• Provide emergency response as needed
• Write accurate, clear, concise and grammatically correct reports
• Handle traffic crashes
• Attend court as needed
• Handle any and all other duties assigned
• Work a minimum of two shifts per month, and provide availability for up to four shifts, each month on all shifts including afternoons, evenings, weekends and holidays 

The applicant for Auxiliary Police Officer (Voluntary Part-Time) will perform duties to include but not limited to:

• Provide emergency response as needed
• Write accurate, clear, concise and grammatically correct reports
• Handle traffic crashes
• Attend court as needed
• Ride w/ sworn officers on patrol
• Handle any and all other duties assigned
• Work a minimum of two shifts per month, and provide availability for up to four shifts, each month on all shifts including afternoons, evenings, weekends and holidays

Minimum qualifications include:

• 21 years of age
• U.S. Citizen
• High school graduate or equivalent (GED)
• Possess a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
• Possess a valid FOID card (or the ability to successfully obtain a valid FOID card)
• Good moral character
• Good mental and physical condition
• Possess and utilize good communication skills and sound judgement
• No felony or domestic violence convictions
• Willingness to work all shifts (with an emphasis on afternoon/evening shifts)
• Willingness to work weekends and holidays
• Applicants for Police Officer (Part-Time) MUST BE a graduate of either a full-time or part-time sworn Illinois law enforcement officer training program, currently State of Illinois Certified (or eligible), or have the appropriate training and certification from another state that is compatible with Illinois training requirements set forth by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB)
• Applicants for Auxiliary Police Officer (Voluntary Part-Time) need not have prior law enforcement experience, nor current/prior certification as a sworn law enforcement officer.  Auxiliary Police Officer (Voluntary Part-Time) employees may be eligible for a future opportunity to become a Police Officer (Part-Time) and attend a Part-Time Law Enforcement Officer training program depending on qualifications, availability, funding, and needs of the agency
• At this time there are no stated requirements for residency declared by the Village of Leland

All qualified applicants will be required to: 

• Pass an oral interview
• Pass a thorough background investigation
• Pass a pre-employment drug screening
• Complete a Reimbursement Agreement for costs incurred by the Village of Leland for the applicant, should the applicant voluntarily resign from the Police Dept. within the first year of employment
• Possess thorough knowledge of Department policies, procedures and rules relating to the operation of the Police Dept. within one year of employment
• Maintain compliance with all ILETSB and Leland Police Dept. training requirements
• The position of Auxiliary Police Officer (Voluntary Part-Time) is an armed position.  The Auxiliary Police Officer (Voluntary Part-Time) must successfully complete a 40-hour Mandatory Firearms Training course approved by the ILETSB within (1) one year of being selected for the position
