LATERAL POLICE OFFICERS

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants for lateral appointment to the position of Police Officer must be an Illinois Certified Police Officer or Other US State equivalent and meet the following minimum qualifications and requirements at the time of application to be considered for the position:

  • Forms: Applications for lateral entry must be made on forms furnished by the Village. Applicants must comply with the requirements of the forms.
  • Certification: An applicant for lateral entry must have been awarded a certificate attesting to the applicant’s successful completion of the Minimum Standards Basic Law Enforcement Training Course, as provided in the Illinois Police Training Act.
  • Experience: An applicant for lateral entry must have been a full time police officer for 24 months in another law enforcement agency to apply.
  • Character; Sound Health: An applicant must be of good moral character, of temperate habits, and of sound health, and must be physically able to perform the essential job functions of the position of police officer.
  • Citizenship; Language: An applicant must be a citizen of the United States with the ability to speak and understand the English language sufficiently to discharge the duties of police officer.
  • Documents: An applicant must provide a copy of the applicant’s birth certificate and high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate, and also must provide a copy of the applicant’s certificate attesting to the applicant’s successful completion of the Minimum Standards Basic Law Enforcement Training Course, as provided in the Illinois Police Training Act. If applicable, the applicant also must provide any Military Service Records including Discharge Papers (DD Form 214).
  • Sections 4.1D, 4.2D Standards: An applicant must qualify under the standards set forth in Section 4.1D and 4.2D of these Rules and Regulations.
    • 4.1D Police Department Minimum Education Standards: No person shall be eligible to apply for the rank of police officer unless that person has successfully completed two years of studies—equaling an associate’s degree, or 60 hours of course work, or equivalent credits—at a junior college, college, or university accredited by a nationally recognized accreditation agency. The Commission may waive this requirement if (1) the applicant has served 24 months of honorable active duty in the United States Armed Forces and has not been discharged dishonorably or under circumstances other than honorable or (2) the applicant has served 180 days of active duty in the United States Armed Forces in combat duty recognized by the Department of Defense and has not been discharged dishonorably or under circumstances other than honorable.
    • 4.2D Exclusion for False Statements: A false statement knowingly made by a person in an application, or connivance in any false statement made in any supplementary information that may accompany the application, or complicity in any fraud related to an application or supplementary information shall be regarded as good cause for exclusion from the examination.
