FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

The Board of Fire Commissioners of the Byron Fire Protection District announces that it will be testing for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic, for the purpose of establishing an eligibility list for hiring.

  • Applications that are incomplete and/or do not have certificates attached may be discarded without notice. You MUST include a copy of the front and back of your Driver's License and CPAT Card.
  • Must be 19 years of age to pick up an application.
  • Must be under 35 years of age when turning in application. 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Age: Must be between the ages of 21 years at time of hire, and under 35 years at time of application unless a statutory exemption is met.
  • Certification Requirements:
    • Must have successfully completed at least two modules of the Firefighter II or Basic Operations Firefighter certifications issued by the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal or equivalent by the date of hire; and 
    • Emergency Medical Technician Basic license issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health, or equivalent by the date of hire; and
    • Must become an Illinois or nationally licensed Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic within two years of the District enrolling individual into a paramedic class and certify into the Swedish American Hospital Emergency Medical Service System within 3 months of completion of paramedic; *The District reserves the right to select a Paramedic off the list if it is deemed to be in the best interest of the District at time of hire.
    • Valid Illinois driver's license (Must obtain a valid Illinois Non-CDL Class B or exempt license within 2 months of employment).
    • Must have a current CPAT Card and Ladder Climb Certificate issued within the last 12 months. You will also be required to have a current CPAT Card / Ladder Climb Certificate at time of hire. Please bring your CPAT card to the Orientation.
  • Vision Standard: Color vision adequate to identify red, green, and yellow color. For visual acuity: 20/30 binocular each eye (corrected) with the ability to use a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus through a corrected lens face piece or contact lens. Peripheral vision of 140 degrees or better.
  • Education: Graduation from high school or evidence of a G.E.D. equivalence diploma.
  • Testing Content: The testing process may include, but may not be limited to:
    • Written Examination (85%)
    • Oral Exam/Interview (15%)
    • Pre-Offer Oral Examination (Pass/Fail)
  • Conditional Offer of Hire: Upon or before receiving a conditional offer of hire, all candidates will be subject to a personal, employment, credit, and criminal history background checks (including State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation records), and upon receipt of a conditional offer of hire the candidate must pass a complete medical examination, which includes comprehensive drug testing, a psychological test, and may include a polygraph test.

A picture ID is required to take the test. Anyone passing all sections of the written exam will move on to the Oral Interviews. The Firefighter-Emergency Medical Service Test Guide is available for purchase at www.applytoserve.com.

ORAL INTERVIEWS:

Anyone who passes the written test will proceed to oral interviews conducted at Byron Fire Protection District station. Candidates will be notified of their interview time via e-mail (only source of notification), please make sure we have a valid email address at all times. Oral Interview scores will be issued on subjective performance based on but not limited to communication skills, leadership skills, experience, and problem-solving ability.

Oral Interviews are scheduled for:

Saturday, January 7, 2023, beginning at 9 AM

PREFERENCE POINTS:

Preference points will be awarded, as outlined in the Fire Commissioner Rules, for the following categories:

Chapter 3, Section B:

  • Veteran's Preference Points - 5 points
  • Educational Preference Points – Associates Degree Non-Related Field – 1 point; Associates Degree Fire Related - 3 points, Bachelors Degree Non-Related Field – 3 points; and Bachelors Degree Fire Related – 5 points
  • Paramedic Preference Points – 5 points
  • Experiences Preference Points – ½ point per year up to 5 points
  • Residency Preference Points – 5 points if Byron resident for 12 months; 4 points Byron Resident less than 12 months; Lives within 10 miles of Byron Station 1 – 3 points; Lives within 15 miles of Byron Station 1 – 2 points and Lives within 20 miles of Byron Station 1 – 1 point; and
  • Additional Preference Points – Rescue Diver – 1 point; Swift Water Certification – 1 point; TRT Certification Ops or Tech ½ point for each certification (Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Trench Rescue and/or Building Collapse Rescue); VMO and/or VMT – ½ point each and Haz-Mat Tech A and/or Tech B – ½ point each. Copies are required and certificates must be issued from an OSFM Approved Agency
