The Community Service Officer performs a variety of administrative and non-sworn law enforcement support duties that do not require a sworn Police Officer. This role supports crime prevention and community outreach efforts, coordinates crossing guard operations, and serves as a key liaison between the Police Department, schools, and the community.
Key Responsibilities:
Community Service Officer Duties:
- Enforce parking regulations at Village-operated commuter lots and issue citations.
- Perform courier duties, including delivering documents, evidence, and materials to courts, labs, and Village officials.
- Assist the public with completing reports such as accident and lost property reports.
- Support crime prevention and community outreach initiatives by preparing materials and delivering presentations.
- Participate in community events, including safety fairs, and distribute educational materials.
- Assist with additional Police Department functions such as animal control, fingerprinting, traffic control, and general support tasks.
Crossing Guard Coordination:
- Serve as the primary contact for all crossing guard operations.
- Assign crossing guard posts and ensure proper coverage at school crossings.
- Develop and maintain schedules, including arranging substitutes as needed.
- Train new and existing crossing guards, including annual and as-needed training sessions.
- Monitor crossing guard performance and report concerns to the Community Relations Supervisor.
- Maintain accurate payroll records and submit documentation each pay period.
- Communicate regularly with school officials regarding schedules, including school year start, summer school, and holidays.
- Provide daily operational updates to the Community Relations Supervisor.
- Assist children and pedestrians with safely crossing streets during assigned times, as needed.
Must haves for the ideal candidate include:
License(s) and/or Certification(s):
- Must possess a valid State of Illinois Class D drivers' license
Education and Experience:
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
- 1-2 years of CSO experience is preferred
Physical requirements:
- Normal conditions are associated with general office environment and outdoor activities in various weather conditions.
- Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment and hand tools.
- Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
