Racing Steward Nighttime Hours – Full/Part-time

Position Description:

• View all races for violations of racing rules, conduct inquiries and/or receive complaints of foul from racing participants.

• Observe preliminary warm-up of horses, noting behavior of horses, lameness, equipment, conduct of drivers/jockeys, change in odds and any unusual incidents.

• Lock pari-mutuel machines at the beginning of each race.

• Maintain Stewards’ List of disqualified horses.

• File daily minutes which shall include all complaints, investigations, dispositions, and findings.

• Submit end of the meet reports at the conclusion of each meet including a summary of the meet and recommendations for improvements or corrections.

• Supervise the issuance of occupation licenses and determine eligibility.

• Conduct inquiries concerning license falsification.

• Enforce and interpret the rules of the Racing Board.

• Supervise and monitor all occupation licenses.

• Conduct investigations and inquiries regarding alleged rule violations.

• Issue penalties.

• Supervise the conduct of track officials and state employees on track grounds.

• Oversee entry and declaration process for the races.

• Supervise the conduct of Board programs (i.e., Detention Barn, Security Department, License Department).

Applicants should possess the following skills and qualifications:

• Detail-oriented and able to make analytically based recommendations, leadership skills, and ability to solve problems and respond to inquiries.

• Law enforcement background/skills.

• Criminal justice background/skills.

• Ability to detect minor and major changes in performance, appearance, or past practice.

• Ability to be proactive in suggesting change.

• Extremely good organization skills.
