Apply for career opportunities as a Police Officer serving a community of 435,000 residents and 3 million annual tourists. Our 817 sworn officers staff patrol operations in four precincts, special operations (canine, mounted, marine, aviation, etc.), special investigations (vice and narcotics) and the detective bureau.
On-line applications for police officer are accepted on an ongoing basis with monthly testing in Virginia Beach, VA. Applicants may test one full year prior to their availability for employment. Three tests (physical agility, written and B-PAD video tests) are administered in one day for the applicants’ convenience. Academy classes begin during the months of February and August each year. It takes approximately 4-5 months to complete the steps in the selection process.

Pay:
Starting pay for police officer recruit $35,554 (increasing 5% to $37,354 upon academy graduation).
Certified Officers:
Both Virginia DCJS certified Police Officers, as well as certified Police Officers from outside Virginia are encouraged to apply. An evaluation of your experience and qualifications will be made during the background investigation and oral interview phases of the process. To be considered for hire as a certified officer, applicants must have a minimum of 12 months uniform patrol experience following all academy and field training processes.
Upon employment, Certified Police Officers will complete an orientation program for four to seven weeks, then patrol with a field-training officer for a period of time. Certified officers serve a 12-month probationary period. Starting salary is commensurate with experience.

Note: There is no maximum age limitation (other than mandatory retirement age of 65). Applicants must present their Department of Motor Vehicles driving abstract in order to be admitted to testing. Successful completion of medical and psychological exams (provided at City expense) is also required prior to employment.
Job Responsibilities:
Individuals will receive training in areas of patrol, investigation, criminal and traffic codes, and, upon completion of the basic academy training and field training program, will be eligible for state certification.
Upon employment, recruits will attend a 24-week basic academy and complete a 15-month probationary program.
Note: Opportunities for Virginia DCJS-certified officers are available at the police officer level (i.e. academy training waived).
