The City of Irving is seeking applicants for Chief of Police. Irving (population 197,000) is located in the heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. Under a Council/Manager form of government, the progressive Irving Police Department has an outstanding reputation in the community.
The Chief of Police provides leadership to a staff of 548, including 325 sworn personnel; and assumes responsibility for all police department services and activities, including crime prevention and detection, criminal investigation, emergency communications and other related law enforcement activities. The Chief confers with officials and citizens on law enforcement issues and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the City Manager, City Council and the Mayor. The annual department budget is approximately $36 million.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university and ten years of experience in a police leadership position are required. Familiarity with Texas Local Government Code, Chapter 143, is desirable. The incumbent must be able to establish and maintain open communication and cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including Police Personnel in all ranks; and have, or be able to obtain, certification as an Intermediate Police Officer in the State of Texas. Certification at the Master level is preferred.
