Chief, University
Police Department
Job Summary:
The candidate in
this position will provide excellent customer service to employees, students,
and the community; protect the faculty, staff, and students from criminal acts
and protect their property; and preserve the peace and civil order on the campus
while enforcing all Federal, State, and Local laws as well as university rules
and procedures.
Work Duties:
-
Directs,
supervises, leads, and actively participates in the operations and activities
of the University Police Department (UPD) to include traffic control,
investigations, maintenance of records regarding all aspects of the
department, and ensures the effective management of all assigned patrol
officers.

Establishes
effective crime prevention programs in which the university community is
educated to protect life and property. Takes appropriate actions to identify
and eliminate hazards and opportunities for crime.

Prepares and
maintains the department’s annual operating budget and submits purchase
requests as needed.

Supervises and
participates in the investigation of complaints, including traffic accidents,
disturbances, and thefts. Maintains a daily police blotter that documents all
incidents during the previous day. Maintains and assesses crime statistics
and implements corrective measures.

Ensures all
Officers are properly trained and display professional conduct and behavior.

Maintains
cooperative relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement
agencies.

Serves on
various committees and is responsible for the university’s Emergency
Operations Plan. Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary:
$42,932 - $52,696
Required Qualifications:
-
Bachelor’s
Degree. Equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s
degree.

Five years of
supervisory experience.
-
Must have
Intermediate, Advance, or Master Peace Officer Certification from Texas
Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. Certified in
TLETS and CPR.

Must possess
strong leadership and management skills. Must take 80 hours of leadership
training every 2 years. Must be familiar with information required by state
and federal governments, such as, The Clery Act. Must be familiar with
conducting employee background checks.

Ability to
work cooperatively with others and provide excellent customer service to
students, employees, and the community. Ability to multi task.
Preferred Qualification:
-
Bachelor’s
degree in police science, criminal justice, or related degree.

Two years of
supervisory experience in a university setting.
