Tennessee Highway Patrol


TRAINING: Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers must complete a 16-week recruit school at the Tennessee Highway Patrol Training Center in Nashville. During training, recruits are required to stay on campus and are allowed to go home on weekends. Training includes course work in police procedures, report writing, civil and criminal laws, state traffic laws, advanced first aid, self-defense tactics, laws of arrest, search and seizure, operation of emergency vehicles, the use of RADAR, intense traffic accident investigation, and other related subjects. 
 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: To be considered for employment as a trooper, you must satisfy the following requirements:
 

AGE: Minimum of 21 on the date of the written examination.
 

DRIVER LICENSE: Must possess a valid Tennessee driver license.
 

EYESIGHT REQUIREMENTS: Minimum visual acuity of 20/100 in each eye, separately without glasses and each eye corrected to 20/30 or better with corrective lenses.
 

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED equivalence. (Note: The education requirement is currently under review and may change before the next recruit school. Please continue to visit this web site for updates.)
 

CRIMINAL HISTORY: No conviction of a felony or of a misdemeanor reflecting moral turpitude.
 

WRITTEN EXAMINATION: Applicants must pass a written civil service examination and obtain a competitive score.
 

ORAL INTERVIEW: Qualified applicants will be interviewed by an oral interview board.
 

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: Applicants must satisfactorily pass a thorough background investigation, including a check of state and federal records.
 

DUTY ASSIGNMENT: Applicants must be willing to accept assignment in any county.
 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must pass a physical examination, a physical agility test, a drug test, and a psychological examination.
