POLICE CHIEF - COLUMBIA, SC

The City of Columbia, capital of the State of South Carolina, is located in the Central portion of the State.  City population is 125,000 and covers 135.2 (+/-) square miles.  The total City budget is $279.5 million; the City has 2,200 employees.  The Police Department budget is $24.6 million and has 408 budgeted positions.  This position reports to the City Manager.  The City Manager is appointed by the Mayor and City Council and is the Chief Administrative Officer of the City.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Administer and oversee all operations of the City’s Police Department; to supervise division commanders and other staff to ensure that law and order are maintained, laws and ordinance enforced and that all departmental operations are properly maintained and implemented; to ensure the maintenance of a positive and cooperative relationship between the department and the community it serves; and, to perform related law enforcement, supervisory and administrative work as required.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Public or Business Administration, Political or Police Science, with major course work in Criminal Justice, or closely related field; Master’s degree strongly preferred; and ten (10) years progressively responsible command experience as a Major, Assistant or Deputy Police Chief, or above, within a medium to large law enforcement organization, public safety operation or metropolitan police department; or any equivalent combination of related education, training and experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid SC Class “D” Driver’s License when hired or within a reasonable period of time following date of hire; must also have an acceptable driving record.  Must possess and maintain Law Enforcement Officer and Firearms Certifications.

Preference may be given to applicants who have completed a nationally recognized Police Executive Development Program, Southern Police Institute, FBI academy, etc.  Must have excellent supervisory, organizational and interpersonal skills and be able to express ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

Must reside within corporate limits of the City of Columbia when hired or within a reasonable period of time following date of hire.

Salary is negotiable, depending on qualifications.  The City has excellent benefit programs and is a member of the SC State Retirement System.
