ALL APPLICANTS MUST MEET MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR POLICE RECRUITMENT:

  1. A high school education or equivalent.

  2. Applicants with one (1) year of law enforcement experience and current certification as a New Mexico Law Enforcement Officer or ability to obtain a New Mexico certification by waiver will be considered "lateral applicants."

  3. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.

  2. Successfully complete the County's physical and psychological examinations prior to commencing work.

  3. Be a United States Citizen.

  4. Possess a valid New Mexico driver's license within 30 days of hire.

  5. Must live within forty (40) statute miles, by public roadway, of the Los Alamos County Municipal Building within 30 days of hire.

  6. Submit to a fingerprint check by the FBI.

  7. Not have been convicted of a felony or other crime involving moral turpitude.

  8. Submit to a thorough background investigation.

  9. Demonstrate an attitude, personality, and character compatible with good police work.

  10. Be familiar with keyboarding and computer systems.

  1. Ability to learn or have knowledge and apply modern police procedures and techniques, principles of investigation and interrogation, and applicable laws and ordinances.

  2. Skill in analyzing situations quickly and objectively, and determining the proper course of action.

  3. Knowledge of local, State and Federal statutes, ordinances, and regulations, and of constitutional law pertaining to police work.

  4. Knowledge of the techniques employed in developing effective community and public relations programs.

  5. Skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.

  6. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with law enforcement officials, the general public and other employees.

  7. Ability to acquire or have skill in the use and care of firearms, in first aid practices, physical strength, technical ability, general intelligence and emotional stability sufficient to meet police duty.

  8. Ability to gain general knowledge of the geography of the County and surrounding areas and of resources available for disaster and other emergencies is required.

 

ADDITIONAL POLICE OFFICER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must complete the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy and receive certification as a New Mexico Peace Officer within six (6) months of hire.

  2. Be able to qualify to operate any weapons used on or off duty before carrying them.

 

POLICE OFFICER PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Twenty (20) accredited college hours or equivalent.

 

ADDITIONAL POLICE CORPORAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent, two (2) years law enforcement experience, including one and a half (1.5) years  with the Los Alamos Police Department, OR for lateral applicants a total of five (5) years experience in law enforcement.

  2. Certification from the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy and (200) hours of advanced training in law enforcement.  Lateral applicants must have ability to obtain a New Mexico Certification by waiver.

  3. Knowledge of modern police procedures and techniques, principles of investigation and interrogation, and applicable laws and ordinances. 

  4. Skill in all aspects of law enforcement procedures, including search and seizure, criminal investigation, crime scene search, interrogation and interview, accident investigation, traffic safety and enforcement, preparation and presentation of court cases, and testifying in court.

  5. Skill in planning, scheduling, directing, supervising and reviewing the performance of subordinates in a manner conducive to productivity and high morale.
     

POLICE CORPORAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Thirty (30) accredited college hours or equivalent.
