Accepting applications for non-temporary and temporary/part-time Firefighter
positions, where selected applicants successfully completing an assessment
process will comprise an eligibility list for up to twelve months, which
will be used to fill future vacancies. Duties include protecting life and
property by responding to emergencies, driving and operating firefighting
vehicles and equipment, controlling and extinguishing fires and providing
emergency medical care at fire scenes pending arrival of Paramedics. Hours
for non-temporary positions include a rotating shift schedule of 12-hour
shifts from 7AM-7PM or 7PM-7AM; or 24-hours on, 48-hours off from 7AM-7AM,
including weekends and holidays. Temporary/part-time positions cover shifts
as needed. Applicants must note all certifications and licenses on
application and indicate interest in non-temporary, temporary/part-time, or
both positions.
Requirements for
non-temporary positions:
High school diploma/GED and
1 year firefighting experience; or an equivalent combination of education
and experience. Must have Firefighter II Certification, valid NC Driver’s
License, and good driving record to begin employment. Must obtain a Class B
Driver’s License within 30 days of employment; NC Emergency Vehicle Driver
Certification within 90 days; EMT Certification within 1 year; and Emergency
Rescue Technician (ERT) and Driver Operator Pump/Aerial certifications
within 2 years.
Requirements for
temporary/part-time positions:
Level I
- High school diploma/GED and 1 year firefighting experience; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires a valid NC
Driver’s License and good driving record to begin employment. Must obtain a
NC Class B Driver’s License within 30 days of employment; Firefighter II
Certification within 1 year; and EMT Certification within 2 years.
Level II
- High school diploma/GED and 3 years firefighting experience; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires a valid NC
Driver’s License, good driving record, and Firefighter II Certification to
begin employment. Must obtain a NC Class B Driver’s License within 30 days
of employment and EMT Certification within 1 year.
Level III
- High school diploma/GED and 5 years firefighting experience; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires a valid NC
Driver’s License, good driving record, Firefighter II Certification and EMT
Certification
to begin employment.
Supplemental documentation may be requested at the assessment. *All
positions require a pre-employment drug screening.
