Our search is for a Director of Public and Environmental Safety. The Director will report to the Vice President, Operations; the Operations Division is responsible for supporting the academic and research mission of the University by: ensuring a safe and secure campus environment; providing clean and well-maintained facilities, and managing the construction of new facilities; feeding students, faculty and staff; and delivering mail.

Public & Environmental Safety supports the University by providing various public safety, security, occupational safety, and public health-related services and programs which contribute to a safe and secure campus environment. Services consist of: the Tufts University Police Department (with a Captain of the Medford/Somerville campus, and a Captain of the Boston/Grafton Campus); Environmental Health and Safety (including Fire Safety); Emergency Management and Planning, including emergency Medical Services; and, Administrative Services (including parking services, shuttle services, photo ID cards, and access systems.)

Job Requirements

In evaluating candidates for Director of Public and Environmental Safety, our search firm will be seeking and validating the following client-specified qualifications:

Qualifications:

At a minimum, a candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree. (And additional degrees/professional certifications are highly desirable.)
A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in public safety in an academic or institutional environment.
A proven record of success in management.
A valid U.S. Driver’s License.
A License to Carry Firearms (in Massachusetts, or another state).
The ability to be warranted as a Special State Police Officer under M.G.L. Chapter 22C Section 63.
Familiarity with the concepts and practices related to campus/community policing – specifically, environmental health and safety (including fire safety); emergency planning and management (including emergency medical services); and related administrative services (including parking, traffic, and access control).
Experience in the direct oversight of a budget.
Familiarity with the requirements of “Clery Act” reporting.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Criminal Justice or related
Experience managing in a union environment
Familiarity with the process of accreditation
Experience in video security procedures
Completion of NIMS Incident Command System training including ICS/IS-100, ICS/IS-200, IS-700, IS-800, ICS-300, and ICS-400

Special Work Schedule Requirements:

The Director must be able to respond to emergency situations, day or night, or available for consultation on public safety issues or concerns
The Director may be required to be present at various University events and functions during off hours and weekends
