Chief of Police
COVINGTON, Kentucky (population 43,010), is located among the rolling hills and bluffs adjacent to the Ohio River, across from Cincinnati, Ohio. Diverse community -- experiencing renaissance of the riverfront, downtown, and distinctive neighborhoods -- is seeking experienced, service oriented candidates to lead its Police Department. The former Chief retired after nearly 37 years with the Department.
The Covington Police Department has a staff of 149 employees (116 sworn), an annual budget of about $12 million. The Department has one union. Appointed by the Mayor and four Commissioners upon the recommendation of the City Manager. The Chief reports to the City Manager who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the community.
The Police Chief is responsible for police operations, emphasizing community policing, crime prevention, and partnerships with City stakeholders. Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal, communication, and management skills, and understand the dynamics of working in an urban department. Candidate should also have experience and/or strong skills in leadership, labor relations, community partnerships and budget preparation. Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred, Master’s degree a plus. Residency preferred but not required.
Starting salary +/- $90,000 DOQ
