The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office is now accepting applications for the position of Corrections Officer.


Testing is being conducted for an immediate need to hire 20 new officers and to establish an eligibility list for future hiring.


Winnebago County Corrections Officers are under the authority and supervision of the Winnebago County Sheriff.  A Corrections Officer is primarily responsible for supervision of inmates within his/her assigned area. Correction Officers participate in the day-to-day operations of the jail which includes but not limited to; booking and releasing inmates, classification, control stations, maintaining security of the facility, escorting offenders within or outside the secure confines of the jail, and supervising inmates in their assigned housing unit. Corrections Officers must communicate effectively with a varied population of offenders, including individuals from diverse ethnic, racial, cultural and economic backgrounds.

You must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Citizenship:  Must be a U.S. Citizen

  • Driver’s License:  Must have a valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain an Illinois Driver’s license upon hiring

  • Age Requirement:  Must have attained their 21st birthday at the time of the last date for filing applications (03/22/16)

  • Education:  Must have a High School Diploma, GED, or High School Proficiency Certificate

  • Character:  Must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character

  • Testing:  Must be able to participate and successfully complete all phases of the testing

  • Residence:  At this time there are no stated requirements for residency declared by the Winnebago County

Foid Card: Must possess or have the ability to obtain an Illinois Firearms Identification Card prior to employment.

(Physical will be a 3 event test including, 1-minute sit-up test, 1 repetition maximum bench press and 1.5 mile run)
