Job Summary:
The Communications Officer operates a computer-aided dispatch and record management system (CAD-RMS), radio, telephone communications system, LEADS/ NCIC, Personal Computer, and monitors a computerized alarm system.

Most work is performed inside an office (Communication Center) environment. The Communications Officer will perform manual work and engage in training that requires some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling objects and climbing elevations. This position operates a variety of standard office equipment including a personal computer and there may be some exposure to dust, noise, unpleasant odors and potentially hazardous conditions. This work environment is a 24/7 operation that requires employees to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays. Overtime work may be required.
Specific Responsibilities:
Operating a 2-way radio, telephone communications system, and LEADS personal computer involving entering and receiving various information to and from LEADS, NCIC, and other agencies; Handles all communications using knowledge of the procedures used to dispatch proper assistance, apparatus, and/or personnel; Monitors the University's Central Alarm System including fire, intrusion, panic, and hold-up alarms, and dispatches accordingly.
Through (CAD-RMS), maintaining record of incoming and outgoing calls for service; Monitoring status of calls to ensure calls for service are expediently dispatched and processed within the framework of procedures and policies; Receiving radio and telephone reports of criminal and non-criminal activity and assigns officers to respond accordingly; Monitoring locations and availability of police officers; Assisting visitors with information and literature; Ensuring all equipment in Communications Center is operational or reports any malfunctions to Technical Services; Field training and educating new personnel on required elements of communications function at competent level; Sorting, compiling, and maintaining statistical records including LEADS records; Performing related duties as required or assigned.
