Established in 1851, Northwestern University has an excellent reputation as a leader in higher education, offering world class academic, research and professional opportunities.  The University Police Department is currently seeking a full time Community Service Officer.

 

The Community Service Officer, as assigned, performs communications, parking, or security duties as part of Residence Hall Security Program.  This position requires a willingness and ability to work outdoors in all seasons in temperatures below 32 degrees and above 90 degrees and requires the ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds (frequently) and 40 pounds (occasionally).

 

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Operating two way radio and 911 telephone communications system and monitoring computerized alarm system and TDD systems

  • Operating LEADS personal computer including entering, monitoring, and receiving various information to and from LEADS, NCIC and other agencies Using knowledge of procedures to handle communications and dispatch proper assistance, apparatus or personnel

  • Inputting and maintaining calls for service utilizing the Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management system

  • Performing clerical duties

  • Sorting and compiling statistical records

  • Performing Parking and traffic control enforcement duties consistent with departmental procedures, including issuing citations, booting and towing vehicles

  • Performing parking office duties such as selling parking permits, data entry permits and violations and related clerical duties

  • Operating and maintaining departmental non-emergency vehicles

  • Monitoring residents, vendors and visitors entering residence hall

  • Reporting building problems such as broken doors, locks, and windows which affect security of the residence halls

  • Performing security checks and foot patrols of residence halls ensuring entrance doors are locked

  • Patrolling campus areas on foot or in vehicle, checking for suspicious persons or circumstances and reporting it to Communications personnel

  • Maintaining close working relationship with residents and staff while enforcing security protocols

  • Assisting with community policing efforts such as crime prevention talks, distributing literature and scheduling events

  • Completing written reports

  • Working special events

  • Reporting any suspicious activity to Communications personnel

  • Performing other related duties as required or assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A high school diploma or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English clearly and correctly

  • Knowledge of proper use and care of radio, radio equipment, ticket writers, telephone and computer and CCTV systems

  • Ability to handle and prioritize events occurring simultaneously

  • Possession of a valid driver's license in state of residency and ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner at all times

  • Ability to successfully complete a field training program and six month probationary period

  • Ability to satisfactorily complete a written exam to evaluate ability to perform successfully in the position

  • Ability to satisfactorily complete a comprehensive psychological exam administered by a licensed psychologist, and a financial and criminal background investigation completed by University Police, including criminal history/fingerprinting check and driving records check

  • Ability to pass drug screening

  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with peers, supervisors, students, faculty, staff, and local police and the general public

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Previous college or military experience
