DeKalb, IL  Northern Illinois University (NIU) seeks progressive public safety executives with exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated leadership and management experience to be candidates for its Police Chief position.  The Police Chief serves as the Chief Operating Officer of the Police and Public Safety Department and reports to the Vice President for Public Safety and Community Relations.

 

NIU is located in DeKalb, Illinois, (population  44,098) approximately 65 miles west of Chicago.  NIU was chartered in 1895 as a state university and now serves approximately 16,552 full-time undergraduate students, 4,984 full-time graduate students, and 333 Law students.  Its DeKalb campus comprises 756 acres including 64 major buildings.  The University is home to seven degree granting colleges and 4,648 faculty and staff of which 1,185 are instructional faculty.  The Department of Police and Public Safety has 62 sworn officers including the command staff.

 

The University is seeking candidates with strong leadership and communication skills. Candidates must be familiar with progressive community policing principles and have a demonstrated record of success in fostering service-oriented relationships, respecting diverse views and cultures, and providing a selfless commitment to quality service.  It is important that the department serve the community with honor, integrity, pride and compassion. Candidates must be committed to an inclusive management style and employee professional development.  A history of developing successful partnerships within the campus community and with neighboring and supporting agencies is essential.

 

Candidates must possess a bachelorís degree in criminal justice, business administration, public administration, communications, or related field. Candidates should also have at least ten years of experience in executive level law enforcement, preferably within a higher education environment. A Masterís degree or completion of an advanced police management school is preferred.

 

Residency within 25 mile radius of NIU is required within 6 months of hire.
