Job Description:


The City of Naperville’s Police Department is seeking a Deputy Chief to plan, organize, manage, and lead the personnel of an assigned division. The ideal candidate will be able to actively execute the vision of the Chief of Police and mission and values of the organization; be an excellent communicator with the ability to have direct, candid conversations; have solid integrity; be decisive while exercising sound judgment; and be responsive with the ability to inspire others.




  • The Deputy Chief will coordinate and direct division activities and develop divisional goals

  • Conduct meetings with subordinates

  • Supervise, train, guide, counsel and coach subordinates

  • Analyze resource allocation

  • Compile data relative to planning, direction, staffing and evaluation of division operations

  • Review and make recommendations regarding investigations of complaints involving officer conduct

  • Develop responses to community problems and prepare/make presentations to various civic groups

  • Complete special assignments for the Chief of Police

  • The ability to develop innovative and creative solutions to community problems is essential

  • The Deputy Chief is responsible for the preparation and administration of the division budget, and assists in the preparation of the department’s budget

  • The Deputy Chief directly supervises 5 - 7 employees and is indirectly responsible for approximately 70-140 employees (dependent on division assignment)


The position involves regular and irregular work hours necessary to provide police services 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.




  • Candidates should be highly skilled in the principles, practices and procedures of contemporary policing. They must possess knowledge of laws, ordinances, and regulations affecting law enforcement, technical and administrative phases of law enforcement, and recent court decisions.

  • Highly-developed abilities in personnel management and conflict resolution as well as outstanding verbal and written communications skills are critical.

  • Budgeting skills are essential.

  • Also desired are the abilities to interact effectively and enthusiastically with the public; to lead, train and evaluate employees; to coach employees for career development; to interpret information and employ effective decision-making skills; and to act quickly and calmly in stressful situations.

  • A Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Law Enforcement or related field is required.  A Master's degree is preferred.

  • Seven years’ experience in law enforcement required.

  • Significant experience in supervisory/management ranks required.

  • Also required are a valid Illinois Class D Driver's License, state certification as Police Officer, and certification by the Illinois Police Training Board.
