The Village of Monee, Illinois is now accepting applications for the position of Police Chief with the Monee Police Department.






Sworn Police Officers:


13 Full-time, 6 Part-time



All applicants must meet the following

minimum requirements:

  1. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration or a closely related field.

  2. Ten (10) years of experience in police work, three years of which must have been equivalent to lieutenant or supervisory command.

  3. Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.

  4. Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.

  5. Functional knowledge of the eastern Will County region.

  6. Valid Illinois driver's license.

  7. Must reside within 40 miles of the Village of Monee (within 12 months of hire).

  8. Must possess a valid FOID card prior to an offer of employment.

Summary of the Position:


The Police Chief is the chief law enforcement officer for the Village of Monee and the Village of Monee Police Department. In this role, the Police Chief provides leadership in fostering a safe environment for the Village of Monee through enforcement of Federal, State, and local laws. Under direction from the Village Administrator and mayor; the Police Chief plans, organizes, coordinates and directs the comprehensive police services for the Village of Monee Police Department, including its patrol, traffic enforcement, investigation, and administrative support services. The Police Chief also provides professional assistance to the Village of Monee Mayor, Board of Trustees, and administration in areas of law enforcement expertise and coordinates assigned activities with other Village of Monee departments and outside agencies. In carrying out these responsibilities, the Police Chief is expected to foster cooperative working relationships with citizen groups and other agencies on police matters.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


In order to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities, the Police Chief must be able to effectively and satisfactorily carry out the following requirements which are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for the position.

  1. Oversees the Village of Monee Police Department functions including but not limited to patrol, traffic enforcement, investigation, crime prevention, local ordinance enforcement, community policing, and public relations.

  2. Directs the investigation of crimes in coordination with other law enforcement agencies; Assists the Village Attorney, States Attorney, and other law enforcement representatives in the preparation of cases.

  3. Monitors changes in the law, court decisions, regulations and technology that may affect the Village of Monee Police Departmentís operations and implements policy and operational changes as required; Provides policy guidance and interpretation to staff to ensure that Federal, state, and local laws as well as policies are consistently enforced.

  4. Develops and implements pro-active, innovative approaches to community orientated policing which promotes public safety, service and community participation (i.e. Explorer Program, CSO Program, task forces, etc.).

  5. Develops strategic goals and directs their implementation, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards to ensure compliance with the Village of Monee Police Departmentís mission and enforcement of Federal, State, and local laws.

  6. Establishes a chain of command and flow of communication, reviews activity to determine problem areas and takes corrective action, conducts staff meetings, reviews schedules and employee performance, solves personnel problems, and arranges for the investigation of any reported or apparent employee misconduct.

  7. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Village of Monee Police Departmentís mission, policies and applicable laws; Such responsibilities include interviewing, hiring recommendations and training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance; issuing discipline as required, rewarding employees, and addressing complaints.

  8. Assists and prepares the development of the Village of Monee Police Departmental budget and provides administrative guidance for the control of budget expenditures.

  9. Directs the preparation of a variety of records and reports relating to Village of Monee Police Departmental activities; prepares reviews and presents reports and other necessary correspondence; reviews and evaluates reports and other documents submitted by subordinate personnel.


Physical Demands and Work Environment:


While performing the core responsibilities, the Police Chiefís duties frequently involve driving, walking, running, standing, climbing, crouching, pushing, jumping over, pulling, carrying, reaching above head, lifting, lowering, hand wrist and elbow motion, grasping, and holding. The Police Chief must have excellent physical condition and vision, ability to hear and speak and full use of arms and legs and may be asked to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.


The Police Chief is also required to attend meetings with at various sites within and away from the village. On occasion, the Police Chief may be required to work extended shifts or be called to emergency situations and work with exposure to difficult circumstances, including exposure to dangerous situations, hazardous materials and all weather conditions.



Educational Requirements:


The Police Chief is required to possess a Bachelorís degree in Criminal Justice or related field from an accredited college or university. The Police Chief must also be a certified law enforcement officer in the State of Illinois or be able to and obtain certification within six (6) months of appointment. The Police Chief must also possess a valid driverís license.



Required Level of Experience:


The Police Chief must have ten (10) years of increasingly responsible broad based experience as a certified law enforcement officer with a recognized law enforcement agency, with five (5) years or more in a supervisory capacity at the command level, on a medium or large policing environment, including municipal exposure; with demonstrated progressively increasing command-level responsibilities.
