Mokena, Illinois, located 45 miles southwest of downtown Chicago in Will County, population 19,042, is a progressive suburban community seeking a skilled Police Chief.


The successful candidate should possess exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills, along with management experience in law enforcement.


The Village of Mokena is a family-oriented community with many desirable amenities including excellent schools, beautiful parks and open space.


The Mokena Police Department employs 30 sworn police officers, 6 civilian employees and operates with a $4.16 million budget. The Village is known for having a low crime rate and a professional and courteous police department.  The Police Chief is appointed by the Mayor and Board of Trustees. The Chief reports to a professional Village Administrator with a 25 year tenure and serves on the Administrator’s executive leadership team.  The current chief is retiring after a long career with the Mokena Police Department.  He is one of only two individuals who have served as Chief of Police during the past 24 years.


The Village is seeking candidates with strong leadership and communications skills who wish to join a well-seasoned and professional management team.  The Village culture is customer-oriented and employees have embraced the motto “Where Our Customers Always Come First.” Candidates must be committed to an inclusive management style and a proven history of building successful partnerships within their communities.


Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, business administration, public administration, or other related field.  Candidates should also have at least five to ten years experience in a municipal law enforcement management or command position.  Completion of an advanced police management school is desired.


Residency in Mokena is expected within 1 year of appointment as required by Village Ordinance.



Annual Salary Range:


$115,570 - $125,146
