TELECOMMUNICATOR

 

The City of McHenry is currently accepting applications for the purposes of developing an Eligibility List for the position of Telecommunicator.  This is a civilian position engaged in the coordination and dispatch of emergency Police, Fire and Emergency Medical services provided by the City of McHenry.  

 

 

Duties: 

  1. Respond to all requests for the City of McHenry, Johnsburg and McCullom Lake Police, McHenry Township Fire Protection District requests for Fire, Medical and Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA) services

  2. Provide assistance to the general public; provide information and directions; handle route inquiries or problems to appropriate police staff member.

  3. Provide data inquiry, retrieval and dissemination for criminal background, intelligence and daily activity summaries for personnel deployment, case investigation and administrative review.

  4. Perform visual security monitoring of Department’s jail facilities and secured building entrances, Squad, employee and facility immediate police public parking lot.

  5. Operates multi-faceted dedicated communications devices for services rendered by same, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), In-House Police Records System, voice recording systems, Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD), FAX machines, copy machines, etc.

  6. Maintain a high level of confidentiality in the performance of your duties. 

  7. Be able and available to work during irregular and irregular shift rotations, which may include weekends, holidays and extended hours in emergency, disaster or other situations influenced by workload of staffing difficulties.

  8. Have an ability to work under stress and use good judgment in emergency situations

  9. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Applicants must hold a high school diploma or equivalent

  • Have a minimum typing proficiency of 45 word per minute

  • Have some general experience with computers and windows operating systems

  • Experience in dealing with emergency traffic is desirable

  • Some experience in public information work is preferred

  • Bilingual speaking skills (English/Spanish) also preferred
