Starting Salary:

Under the administrative direction of the Executive Director and Director of Operations and Public Safety, the McHenry County Conservation District Chief of Police is responsible for all activities of the Police Department, including police operations and administration. The District expects an active leader who is highly communicative, engaging and accessible to the members of the McHenry County Conservation District Police Department.


The Police Chief is expected to not only lead the activities of the Police Department, but also be a key member of the Districtís Leadership Team. He/she must consistently work toward the overall betterment of the Conservation District and the greater McHenry County. This work is done in an environment of transparency, accountability and collaboration.




  • A Bachelorís degree (B. A./ B.S.) from four-year college or university in police science, police administration, criminal justice, or a related field.

  • Specialized administrative training, such as the Illinois State Police Academy or FBI National Academy.

  • At least ten (10) years related progressively responsible experience in law enforcement in a variety of police functions, with at least five (5) years of experience which shall have been in a management capacity at a supervisory level or above; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Possess a current and valid Illinois Peace Officerís certification.




The anticipated starting salary range for this position is:


$82,666 - $103,333, depending on qualifications
