MATTESON, IL FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC
The Village of Matteson will conduct testing April 18 & 19, 2008 in order to establish a Firefighter/Paramedic Eligibility Register.
The Matteson Fire Department operates with a full-time staff of 34, a Fire Chief, three full-time civilian employees, from two stations located at 3445 211th Street & 1015 Central Avenue and the Village Hall.
REQUIREMENTS
CITIZENSHIP: Firefighter/Paramedic must be a citizen of the United States.
AGE: All applicants for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic shall be under 35 years of age but not less than 21 years of age at date of examination, except as otherwise provided by law. Proof of birth date will be required before appointment.
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: Must be comparable for overall size and body structure.
GENERAL PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: Must be able to demonstrate physical ability and muscular coordination, and pass a rigid physical examination, including tests for drug use.
CHARACTER: Must be of good moral character and of temperate habits. Psychological and polygraph tests will be required for final applicants.
EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED equivalent at time of testing. Certified copies of certificates and/or sealed college transcripts must be submitted to the Fire & Police Commission or postmarked by the date of the oral interview, if being mailed.
RESIDENCY: Any firefighter hired after April 18, 1994 shall, within 18 months of beginning their employment and continuously thereafter, reside within the following streets: the Indiana border to the East, Farrell/Cherry Hill Road to the West, 127th Street to the North and Eagle Lake Road to the South.
WAGES AND BENEFITS
WAGES: Starting Salary: $44,099 (without Firefighter/Paramedic Certification) $50,099 (with Firefighter/Paramedic Certification) Top Salary: $67,215
TIME OFF: The Village recognizes 10 Kelly Days and two personal days during each fiscal year to Firefighter/Paramedics.
SICK LEAVE: Each fiscal year Firefighter/Paramedics receive six (6) days for 24 hour shift employees. Unused sick leave may be accumulated without limitation.
VACATION: Years of Service Yearly Vacation Time 1 - 4 144 hours 5 - 9 192 hours 10 - 19 240 hours 20 or more 312 hours
PAY PERIODS: Village pay periods are bi-weekly on Fridays, 1/26th of annual salary, plus overtime worked.
INSURANCE: The Village offers comprehensive health and dental insurance, 1 x base salary life coverage, and short-term disability package.
PENSION PLAN: Firefighter/Paramedics may enroll in the Matteson Fire Pension Plan, which is governed by its own Board of Trustees and monitored by the state of Illinois. Firefighter/Paramedics contribute 9.455% of their salary on a pre-tax basis.
Under this plan, a Firefighter/Paramedic age fifty (50) or over with twenty (20) years of service, may collect a pension equal 50% of their last year’s salary. Firefighter/Paramedics under age fifty (50) may increase their pension benefits by remaining with the department. For each year worked past twenty (20) a Firefighter/Paramedic increases his pension benefit by 2% from the 21st year to the 30th year and by 1% from the 31st year to the 35th year to a maximum of 75% of their last year’s salary.

BARGAINING UNIT PRESENTATION: Firefighter/Paramedics are represented by the Associated Firefighters of Matteson Local 3086 of the International Association of Firefighters. Employees who are members of the unit are required to pay a fair share of the union dues as a condition of their employment with the Village.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
The Village of Matteson (pronounced Mat-te-son) is located 28 miles southwest of Chicago's downtown and lakefront, and shares boundaries with Olympia Fields, Frankfort, Park Forest, Tinley Park and Richton Park, and boasts a population of 16,016*. Matteson is positioned around Interstate 57 that creates the east and west boundaries of the community, is three miles away from Interstate 80, and has two Metra Stations - ideal for commuters. The Village is governed by a Village President and six trustees elected-at-large, and is staffed by a Village Administrator and 155 employees. Matteson is a major regional retail center, featuring a regional shopping mall under redevelopment. Over 750 acres of vacant land is available for residential and commercial development. The Village is served by the award-winning Rich Township High School District #227, two elementary school districts #159 and #162, as well as several private and parochial elementary and pre-schools. The Village of Matteson also hosts a 23,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art public library. Three health care facilities and two institutions of higher education are located in neighboring communities.
The massive growth of new homes in the community created a need for a special census in 2005, which resulted in a population increased by more than 3,000 from the 2000 census report. The demographic makeup of the Village established by the special 2005 census is 92.7% Black, 5.0% White, 3.1% Hispanic and 0.8% Asian. The Village offers a variety of attractive subdivisions with homes ranging in price from the mid $100,000s to over $400,000 with the median home value at $192,009 for existing homes. Eighty-two percent of Matteson’s housing is single family.
The Village owns over 100 acres of parks, offering tennis courts, ball fields, picnic areas and a community center, which provides numerous programs. Acres of forest preserve and nature centers, trails for cross-country skiing, hiking, jogging and bicycling are minutes away.
