COMMUNITY PROFILE

The Village of Matteson (pronounced Mat-te-son) is located 28 miles southwest of Chicago's downtown and lakefront, and shares boundaries with Olympia Fields, Frankfort, Park Forest, Tinley Park and Richton Park, and boasts a population of 16,016*.  Matteson is positioned around Interstate 57 that creates the east and west boundaries of the community, is three miles away from Interstate 80, and has two Metra Stations - ideal for commuters. The Village is governed by a Village President and six trustees elected-at-large, and is staffed by a Village Administrator and 155 employees.  Matteson is a major regional retail center, featuring a regional shopping mall under redevelopment.  Over 750 acres of vacant land is available for residential and commercial development.  The Village is served by the award-winning Rich Township High School District #227, two elementary school districts #159 and #162, as well as several private and parochial elementary and pre-schools.  The Village of Matteson also hosts a 23,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art public library.  Three health care facilities and two institutions of higher education are located in neighboring communities.

The massive growth of new homes in the community created a need for a special census in 2005, which resulted in a population increased by more than 3,000 from the 2000 census report. The demographic makeup of the Village established by the special 2005 census is 92.7% Black, 5.0% White, 3.1% Hispanic and 0.8% Asian.  The Village offers a variety of attractive subdivisions with homes ranging in price from the mid $100,000s to over $400,000 with the median home value at $192,009 for existing homes.  Eighty-two percent of Matteson’s housing is single family.

The Village owns over 100 acres of parks, offering tennis courts, ball fields, picnic areas and a community center, which provides numerous programs.  Acres of forest preserve and nature centers, trails for cross-country skiing, hiking, jogging and bicycling are minutes away.
