POLICE CHIEF

City of Marengo, Illinois

The City of Marengo, Illinois, (Population 7,637), a growing community in southwest McHenry County, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Police Chief.  Marengo is situated in southwest McHenry County approximately 5 miles north of I – 90, along Illinois Route 176, Illinois Route 23 and U.S. Route 20. 

The Police Department budget is approximately $2.1 million.  Current staff includes one Deputy Chief, three Sergeants, one detective, ten patrol officers and four dispatchers.  The Chief is appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council and reports directly to the Mayor.

The City is seeking an experienced law enforcement professional with skills in supervision, staff development and planning who is dedicated to community service and demonstrates excellent leadership and administrative skills.

Qualifications: 

• The successful candidate must possess the ability to develop a good working relationship with other area law enforcement agencies and the City’s other Department Heads.

• A minimum of ten (10) years progressively responsible law enforcement experience is required.

• An Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, Police Administration or equivalent combination of experience and advanced police leadership training programs such as FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, or Northwestern Center for Public Safety School of Staff and Command is highly desirable.

The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $90,000 DOQ plus excellent benefits.

Residency within thirty (30) miles of the City’s corporate boundaries will be required within one year after appointment.
