The Village of Lemont, Illinois, resident population 16,000, is seeking a strategic leader to serve as Police Chief. The Chief reports directly to the Village Administrator and manages a staff of 27 sworn officers and over 40 civilian employees with a $4.5 million annual budget. The Village of Lemont is a community of 8.18 square miles located just 25 miles from Chicago in southwestern Cook County.
As a part of the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor, Lemont is rich in history. Lemontís charming downtown is filled with unique boutiques, independently owned restaurants, and historic and cultural attractions. Excellent recreation options abound in Lemont. The pride of Lemont is the 100-acre Heritage Quarries Recreation Area which straddles the historic Illinois & Michigan Canal and features hiking, biking, fishing, and kayaking. Lemont also boasts seven golf courses, including the renowned Cog Hill Golf & Country Club. Thousands of acres of forest preserves around Lemont provide 65 miles of trails for hiking and biking.
The police department is a progressive agency that is community based and grounded in traditional values. Training and technology are integral components of LPD. Responding to business and resident needs are a focus of Lemont Police Department's community policing efforts. Children play a large part in LPD's community policing plan, which include an annual Kops n Kidz Day and open house for children with special needs. A SRO and drug education officer provides the education component to LPD's efforts. LPD's mission is to provide professional and competent police services with a personal touch. Lemont is a vibrant family based community with rich historical value. LPD provides for the security and service based needs of its citizens.
The Police Chief is responsible for performing highly responsible administrative, supervisory and technical work in directing the activities of a municipal police force. Candidates must be committed to training, professional development and community engagement. Candidates must also possess well developed interpersonal communication and public presentation skills and be a person of utmost integrity.
Required education includes bachelorís degree in a related field; a masterís degree is a plus.
Required experience includes at least seven (7) to ten (10) years as Chief, Deputy Chief , Commander or similar rank and level of responsibility in a unionized law enforcement environment.
Strong skills/experience in CALEA program, community policing, labor relations, grant administration, and emergency management are essential.
