Lake County is seeking an individual to perform assigned responsibilities and duties in the Marine Unit. Duties include rendering service to the general public, protecting life and all property in the County. This individual will perform duties of physical or mental nature in the process of apprehension or during the arrest of violators of criminal or civil law. They will also investigate known criminals, complaints, and enforce County, State, and Local boating regulations while patrolling jurisdictional waters under all traffic and weather conditions. Individuals will patrol and remain in the assigned geographical area (district) during assigned shift and operate a marked police boat in the company of another deputy. They will enforce criminal and motorboat laws, arrest persons suspected of violating ordinances and statutes, including use of physical force as necessary to subdue suspects, investigate and prepare written reports on accidents, crimes, suspicious conditions and respond to complaints.
To perform this job successfully the candidate must currently be a State of Illinois Certified Police Officer and must possess a current Driver’s License. Must work at least 6 shifts per month during the Marine Unit Season and this minimally totals 36 hours per month. Should have knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement and police science, as practiced in the State of Illinois. Individual should have knowledge of State laws and local ordinances which govern the County of Lake and knowledge of how and when to apply “DEADLY FORCE” in the enforcement of laws or the apprehension of criminals. Must have the ability to quickly assess situations and to use sound judgment in defusing potentially dangerous human interaction problems as well as the ability to handle stressful, potentially violent situations and individuals in a firm, professional and deliberative manner. Candidate must have the ability to perform strenuous physical tasks and to demonstrate good physical and psychological fitness ability in the safe and effective use of firearms, motor vehicles and other specialized equipment. They should be able to operate a watercraft (boat) in a safe and effective manner according to established policies and procedures. Individual must have the ability to swim and complete a 3rd Class Navy Swim Test, the ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
Candidates must have completed a standard high school program or GED; currently possess a State of Illinois Certification as a police officer; have valid Driver’s License (supplemented by a satisfactory driving record) and complete a certified boating course. Candidates must also complete a swim test (3rd class – Nav); spring classroom training, and County-sponsored physical, to include a possible stress test.
