The Kane County Emergency Communications Center (Kane Comm) in Geneva, IL is accepting applications for the position of Telecommunicator.

 

 

Training wage is $34,820 per year.

 

At completion of training annual salary increases to $38,678.

 

This is a bargaining unit position.

 

 

Kane Comm is a 24 hour, 7 days a week operation and applicants must have the desire and ability to work any shift, including weekends and holidays.

 

Kane Comm is a continuous operations function of multi agencies, and Public Service Answering Point (PSAP) for ten police departments and six fire departments.

 

 

Working under minimal supervision duties include

but are not limited to:

  • Receiving 911 system multi-jurisdictional calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services;

  • Using a computer aided dispatch system;

  • Determining the nature and location of the emergency;

  • Maintaining contact with all units on assignment while consistently disseminating information and updating the status and location of calls;

  • Dispatching first responders according to established procedures, operating various telecommunications equipment, and performing related work as assigned;

  • Entering and retrieving information from an assortment of computerized files; including but are not limited to, missing persons, orders of protection, registered sex offenders, stolen weapons, and stolen vehicles.

 

Requirements:

  • Applicants must have previous Emergency Telecommunicator experience; Submissions from candidates without the mandatory experience required will not be considered for the position.

  • Must pass a keystroke/typing test minimum of 35 words per minute, applicant testing, job simulation exercise, oral interview;

  • Extensive background investigation; criminal history check, psychological evaluation, physical exam and drug test.

  • Requires working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office.

  • Multitasking is a necessity.

  • Map reading is required.

  • Ability to remain calm under extremely stressful situations while making rapid and sound independent decisions is crucial.

  • Must possess effective oral and written communication skills and exercise patience with callers who may be emotionally distraught, intoxicated, or difficult to understand.

  • Memorization of codes, names, locations, and other detailed information is required.

  • Must communicate tactfully with residents, public safety personnel, and coworkers.
