FIRE CHIEF

The Homer Township Fire Protection District is accepting applications from qualified individuals for the position of Fire Chief.

The salary for this position is dependent on experience and qualifications.  In addition, the District offers a progressive benefit package that includes paid vacation, paid holidays; medical, dental and life insurance coverage; travel allowance; and contributions to a Retirement Plan.

The Homer Township Fire Protection District is a progressive and well-equipped fire department located in Will County approximately 35 miles southwest of Chicago. The District has a population of approximately   30,000   and covers  22 square miles which include an attractive and balanced blend of rural, residential, commercial and industrial land use.

The fire district has an authorized strength of 41 commissioned personnel including a Fire Chief, a Deputy Chief, three captains, ten lieutenants and 26 Firefighter/Paramedics (including an EMS Coordinator and Training Coordinator). In addition the district has a civilian staff consisting of a fire prevention bureau supervisor, inspector, administrative secretary, a human resource/finance director and executive assistant. The district operates three stations and dispatching is provided by Wescom. The District has an annual budget of $ 4.2 million. All commissioned personnel, excluding the Fire Chief and the Deputy Chief, are covered under a collective bargaining agreement with the International Association of Firefighters, Local 4223.

Applicants for this position should possess:

• A minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible full-time experience in a local fire district/department of equivalent size and characteristics, including at least five years in a responsible command (chief officer) position, preferably in a fire district of comparable size and characteristics (e.g., full-time fire and EMS or combination versus volunteer)

• A Bachelors Degree (Master’s preferred) in fire service administration, public/business administration or closely related field from a North Central regionally accredited college or university supplemented by advanced management training from the National Fire Academy or its equivalent

• Candidates must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, extensive labor management experience including contract negotiations, comprehensive knowledge of governmental financial processes (tax caps, budget and levy), strong leadership ability

• Be able to work effectively with local elected and appointed officials and community representatives

• Have a strong commitment to quality-based fire and EMS services

• Have the ability to foster and maintain a high level of professional and ethical conduct among members of the fire department

• Residency within a fifteen mile radius of the borders of the District’s boundaries is required within the first year
