Requirements:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States or alien lawfully admitted for
    permanent residence or temporary residence who produces evidence of
    intention to become a citizen. 

  • Must be of excellent moral character and temperate habits. 

  • Must be able to read and write the English language.

  • A minimum of 21 years of age and not to exceed 35 years at time of
    application, unless you qualify for waiver under statutory exemption.

  • Must be able to demonstrate physical agility and muscular coordination
    and pass a rigid Physical Aptitude Test. 

  • Height and weight must be proportional to size and body structure. 

  • Minimum acuity 20/200 in each eye uncorrected and must be correctable to 20/20 in each eye.  Normal color and peripheral vision and depth perception.  Contact lenses are permitted. 

  • Minimum of High School Diploma, or G.E.D. equivalency certificate. 

  • Must live within the State of Illinois and a 25 mile radius of the Highwood City Hall at time of starting employment. 

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and during probationary
    period obtain upgrade to classification (Class B - non CDL) which
    permits the firefighter to drive all fire department vehicles. 

  • Must pass the written examination. 

  • Must achieve the minimum passing grade on the Oral Interview. 

  • Must pass a background investigation, polygraph test, psychological examination, and prior to starting a medical examination. 

  • Subject to additional requirements, rules and regulations of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, including EMT license.
     

Firefighter/paramedics hired must already possess a current valid license as a paramedic, issued or recognized by the State of Illinois, and must either possess state certification for Firefighter Level 2 and Hazardous Materials Operation or must successfully complete those certifications within the first year of hire, and must successfully complete other Highwood Fire Department training and an 18 month probationary period. 

 

New firefighters/paramedics shall be required to sign an Agreement with the City requiring reimbursement to the City for training expenses, hiring costs and other costs upon resignation as a firefighter/paramedic within the first 3 years of employment.
 

Probationary Fighter/Paramedic starting salary range is $ 33,638 to $36,225.  (State certified firefighter/paramedic transferring from other departments up to $ 44,900, depending upon qualifications.)
