Communications Operator Recruitment Notice

If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, the Gurnee Police Department is seeking service-oriented individuals to join its team for a full time Communications Operator vacancy.

 

Communications Operators are a vital part of the public safety team, answering and dispatching 911 calls for service, and communicating with Police Officers and Firefighter/Paramedics in the field. Communications Operators must be proficient in call taking, emergency medical dispatch, police dispatch, and fire dispatch operations. Communications Operators also assist in providing customer service to walk-in customers and over the telephone by answering the non-emergency line, and assist with Police records management.

 

 

We are looking for

candidates with the following key qualities:

  • Ability to quickly learn the operation of equipment and system procedures

  • Ability to make rapid and precise judgments in a real-time work situations

  • Remain calm under conditions that are stressful

  • Coordinate many different processes at once and coordinate actions in relation to the actions taken by others

  • Adjust rapidly to changes in the tempo of work activity

  • Use sound judgment and act decisively in emergency situations

  • Ability to communicate effectively (rapidly, clearly, and distinctly) orally and in writing

  • Interpersonal skills and characteristics that reflect a service orientation and desire to treat the public with tact, courtesy, and respect

 

In addition to these key qualities, other requirements

and desirable qualifications include:

  • US citizen/legal work authorization

  • HS Diploma/GED

  • Ability to accurately type

  • 18+ months experience of 911 dispatching experience in police and fire/EMS

  • Current or previous LEADS full access certification (or equivalent state system)

  • The successful candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain LEADS full access and EMD certification prior to concluding the Communications Operator training program as a condition of continued employment

Other desirable or strongly preferred qualifications include Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification and/or bi-lingual skills.

 

 

Starting Rate of Pay:

 

$25.88/hour plus benefits
