911 Communications Operator

with the Gurnee Police Department

 

Communications Operators currently working for another public dispatch agency are eligible for a $1,000 sign-on bonus if hired.*

 

*must be currently employed in good standing and working a regular full time or part time schedule. The Village of Gurnee reserves all rights to make the final determination on eligibility for sign-on bonus.

 

 

The 911 Communications Operator receives, evaluates, and processes incoming emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire, and medical assistance and operates base radio equipment to dispatch appropriate personnel based on the incident type. Work involves evaluating incoming calls, dispatching field units, and transmitting information and messages. Must be able to analyze situations quickly and determine proper course of action while under stress.

 

 

Requires:

  • High school diploma (or GED)

  • Ability to accurately type

  • Selective attention and the ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted

  • Ability to identify and understand the speech of another person

  • Oral comprehension skills

  • Ability to accurately communicate information orally through open-air communications and in writing through computer aided dispatch

  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously

 

Work Schedule:

  • 12 hour shifts including nights, weekends, holidays

  • Requires ability to work mandatory overtime assignments

 

The hiring process includes:

  • Written examination

  • Oral interview

  • Background investigation

  • Post-offer medical examination and drug screen

Due to the anticipated candidate response, only those applicants with experience and skills most closely meeting the needs of this position may be invited to participate in testing exercises.  Top qualifying candidates may be invited for interview and further testing.   The Village of Gurnee reserves the right to change this process.

 

 

Starting Salary:

 

$48,140 plus benefits

 

Current top salary (after 6 years):

 

$64,513

 

This position has a living radius of 20 miles as measured from the Gurnee Police Station.  The successful candidate must reside within limit within 24 months after hire.
