The Village of Glencoe is seeking energetic, service-oriented individuals to join its team as part-time 911 Communications Operators in the Public Safety Department.

The Public Safety Department is a full-service, combined public safety department that is staffed by civilians as well as cross-trained sworn Public Safety Officers, who provide police, fire, and emergency medical services.    911 Communications Operators are a vital part of the public safety team, answering and dispatching 911 calls for service, and communicating with Public Safety Officers in the field.  Communications Operators must be proficient in call taking, emergency medical dispatch, police dispatch, and fire dispatch operations.  Communications Operators may work with one partner, or may be the only Communications Operator on shift.  Communications Operators also assist in providing customer service to walk-in customers and over the telephone by answering the Public Safety non-emergency line, and assist with Public Safety records management.

The Village wishes to supplement its full-time staff with part-time Communications Operators that can provide coverage for full and half shifts while full-time Communications Operators are on leave.  Part-time Communications Operators may work approximately 16 to 24 hours per week on any of the Villageís shifts (eight-hour shifts Monday through Friday, or 12-hour shifts on weekends).  The number of hours per week and shift assignments will vary based on the departmentís needs.

  • A high school diploma or general education degree,

  • At least one year of 911 dispatching experience in police and fire/EMS strongly preferred,

  • Emergency medical dispatch (EMD) certification strongly preferred,

  • LEADS full access strongly preferred.

  • The successful candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain LEADS full access and EMD certification prior to concluding the Communications Operator training program as a condition of continued employment.

Communications Operators must be able to learn geographic features, streets, police beats and fire grids within the Village; operate telephone, teletype, dispatch and related equipment; read and understand maps; work under pressure, exercise good judgment and make sound decisions in emergency situations; work with a partner or work independently; communicate clearly and effectively in high-pressure situations; use proper radio procedures and 10 codes; provide outstanding customer service; and establish and maintain strong working relationships with Public Safety staff.  Strong computer skills and proficiency with dispatching equipment is a must.  Part-time Communications Operators must be able to work a flexible schedule to fill shift vacancies.  Physical requirements include the ability to sit for extended periods of time; talk; hear; walk; stand; lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds; use hands to type, handle or feel objects or controls; and reach with hands and arms with or without accommodation.
