The Elk Grove Village Board of Fire & Police Commissioners will be conducting open competitive examinations for the position of FIREFIGHTER. Selection will be based upon the results of several components: Written Examination, Group Oral Interview, Background Investigation, Polygraph Examination, Individual Oral Interview, Psychological and Medical Evaluations.

Candidates will be permitted to request session A or B. We will attempt to honor all requests but reserve the right to assign the alternate time when necessary. Spouses/significant others are welcome to attend the orientation; however, only candidates will be permitted in the examination area. No late entry will be permitted.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE FOR ALL TESTING COMPONENTS: (Dates subject to change)
A candidate who fails any component of the testing process shall be excluded from further consideration during this hiring process, but may reapply at future tests.
ELIGIBILITY LISTS
The Preliminary Eligibility List shall be created listing all applicants earning a score of 70% or higher on the written examination. The top scoring 100 candidates will eligible to participate in group oral interviews which will be conducted in December. Candidates earning a passing score of 70% or higher on the group oral interview will be ranked on a Final Eligibility List based upon their combined written examination score and group interview score plus preference points earned. As openings occur, candidates will be selected in order from the Final Eligibility List, and will complete the remaining components of the testing process. A candidate who successfully passes their individual oral interview will be extended a conditional offer of employment contingent upon satisfactory psychological and medical evaluations.
DURATION OF FINAL ELIGIBILITY LIST
The Final Eligibility List will remain in effect for two years. If all names are exhausted prior to the list’s expiration, the Fire & Police Commission will return to the preliminary eligibility list to process the next one hundred (100) candidates to create a subsequent Final Eligibility List. This list shall have the same expiration date as the previous Final Eligibility List.
PREFERENCE POINTS
The following preference points will be awarded to candidates achieving a passing grade both on the written examination and multiple group interviews:
Notes: Only one IDHP license may apply towards points; maximum number of points awarded per candidate will be three (3.0) points. Candidates will be required to present IDHP license copy and/or DD Form 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty at the time of their group oral interview to be eligible for preference points.
GENERAL INFORMATION
WORK SCHEDULE:
Firefighters currently work on 24 hours and off 48 hours. Firefighters are eligible for overtime pay in accordance with the conditions defined in the collective bargaining agreement between the Village of Elk Grove Village and the Elk Grove Firefighters Association, Local No. 2340.
COMPENSATION:
Step Pay Plan for Firefighters:
Hourly rate calculated by dividing the annual salary by 2,750 annual hours. Employees are paid bi-weekly on Friday for a total of twenty-six (26) pay periods per year. An additional stipend is provided to all authorized paramedics.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN:
Full time Village employees may participate in a Deferred Compensation Plan made available through the Village by the International City Management Association Retirement Corporation.
PENSION:
The Illinois State Statutes require that 9.455 percent of the base salary of a Firefighter be deducted on a monthly basis and placed in a pension fund. The Village contributes 22.57 percent into the Pension Fund. The Fire Pension Fund is administered according to prescribed State law.
VOLUNTARY RETIREMENT:
Eligibility:
Age 50 with 20 years of service.
Amount:
The annual benefit amount is equal to the product of final pay times the sum of (1) 50%, plus (2) 2.5% for each year of service in excess of 20 years through 30 years of service. The maximum benefit is 75% of final pay. Final pay is defined as salary attached to rank held at termination of active service.

The Village offers a comprehensive benefit package for the employee and qualifying dependents. This benefit package includes medical, dental, and life insurance benefits. TRAINING:
The Village of Elk Grove Village Fire Department participates in the Illinois State Certified Firefighters Training Program. Courses toward achieving required State Certification are provided through the department. New hires will have $75.00 deducted per payroll check until the employee completes his/her probationary period. Upon attainment of permanent employment status, he/she will be reimbursed for the total amount that has been withheld. If the employee fails to attain permanent employment status, the amount that has been withheld will be used to reimburse the Village for its training and equipment costs.
CERTIFICATIONS/SPECIALTIES:
Firefighters shall obtain certifications and/or specialties as required and/or deemed necessary for the effective operation of the Fire Department. All Firefighters shall become certified as Illinois State Certified Firefighters (Level II), Hazardous Materials First Responders Operations and Emergency Medical Technician Level B (EMT-B) prior to completion of their probationary period. A Firefighter shall become an Illinois State Certified Firefighter (Level III) within three (3) years from his/her initial date of employment. Other certification and/or specialties deemed necessary include but are not limited to those within the areas of fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue, fire prevention and investigation, hazardous materials, and public education. All required certifications and/or specialties obtained shall be maintained unless express written permission to decertify in a given area is granted by the Fire Chief. This is determined by the operational needs of the Fire Department. Licensure as a paramedic may be required as a condition of continued employment at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
UNIFORMS:
All uniforms are provided and replaced as needed under a quartermaster system at no cost to the Firefighter.
