The City of Elgin, Illinois seeks highly qualified Public Safety
Telecommunicator candidates. Founded in 1836 and located 35 miles northwest of

Elgin operates under the council-manager form of government, which was adopted
in Elgin in 1954. The City has approximately 640 Full Time Employees and a $275
million budget. The City Council has established eight priorities that guide
city operations and policies: Diverse Workforce, Financial Stewardship,
Economic Development, Education and Workforce Development, Image and Engagement,
Neighborhoods and Public Safety.
Public Safety Telecommunicators perform the full range of dispatching public
safety personnel and equipment during an emergency situation. Public Safety
Telecommunicator receive routine and emergency calls and transmit/receive
messages via radio, 9-1-1 emergency phone lines and various computer systems.
The Emergency Communications Center operates on a 7-day, 24-hour schedule basis
and if selected you will work a variety of shifts along with an opportunity for
Functions of the position include:
Answers incoming 911 and non-emergency phone calls and takes appropriate action
to handle call.
Dispatches appropriate emergency police, fire, and rescue units to calls for
service, prioritizing each incident, and under varied conditions using standard
Monitors the status of all committed fire, police, and rescue units and provide
supplemental information to units as it becomes available and/or necessary
Monitors, receives, enters and makes inquiries utilizing various sophisticated
public safety computer systems for a variety law enforcement and fire related
Completes Computer Aided Dispatch terminal entry on incidents, alarms, or calls
Handles emergency medical requests utilizing an emergency medical dispatch
protocol computer system
Monitors citywide talk group after hours to respond to incoming transmissions
from field personnel
Handles incoming alarms and monitors the emergency system frequency
Processes and handles all calls to certain agencies regarding disaster
situations or hazardous material incidents
Requirements for the position:
Candidates must meet and submit the following required documentation by

Must attach a copy of your high school diploma or G.E.D to your application
Schedule and satisfactorily pass the written test
able to satisfactorily pass a background investigation to determine suitability
