Responsible for the
protection of life and property through enforcement of applicable state, federal
and local laws. Responsible for the prevention, detection and investigation of
crimes; maintaining order; patrol of assigned areas; enforcement of traffic
regulations; accident, criminal and other investigations. Duties may entail
other special assignments of similar complexity. Also involved in the work is an
element of personal danger. Work may be performed either in uniform or plain
clothes, in an automobile, or on foot, and on an assigned shift or more flexible
hours. Assignments are received from superior officers and are carried out under
established policies and procedures. However, employees must exercise
considerable judgment, initiative and skill in their application to a variety of
cases.
Responsibilities:
Patrols a designated
area during an assigned shift, in a car or on foot, to preserve order, to
prevent and discover the commission of crime, and to enforce traffic
regulations.
Conducts preliminary
investigation at the scenes of crimes and accidents; administers first aid.
Gathers evidence; locates and questions witnesses and gives aid and support to
victims.
Investigates
suspicious incidents occurring during tour of duty; investigates crimes
against persons, visits the crime scene; interviews victims and witnesses,
interrogates suspects; collects evidence and may call for technical
identification and laboratory assistance to evaluate such evidence; arrests
persons or persons suspected of the crime; investigates complaints concerning
the theft or damage to property; investigates reports of breaking and entering
buildings; submits written reports to supervisors, as required, on all such
activities on assigned shift. Handles all sensitive and confidential
information with discretion and keep others informed on a need to know basis
only.
Apprehends and arrests
suspects for felony or misdemeanor offenses in accordance with State statutes;
collects evidence and interviews any possible witnesses for subsequent court
hearings.
Investigates calls for
service of a non-criminal nature, such as family disputes, injured or ill
subjects and civil disagreements; assesses individual cases to determine
appropriate action.
Investigates vehicle
accidents, including hit and run accidents; determines if criminal negligence
is involved and makes arrests of suspects or writes citations as required;
completes required forms and reports including the identification of all
vehicles, passengers, witnesses, injuries, and the like.
Enforces traffic and
parking regulations through visual and radar patrol, assists in the
maintenance of traffic control for efficient flow through the College and may
issue written warnings or citations to offenders.
Observes and searches
crime scenes for physical evidence; collects, photographs and/or preserves
evidence found for possible future legal proceedings.
Completes special
investigations when assigned; serves as escort and controls traffic at special
events; furnishes assistance and information to private citizens and
motorists.
Mediates disputes
involving such matters as peace and quiet, property rights, labor issues,
political differences and other confrontations between individuals or groups.
Maintains communication and rapport with a variety of groups within the
College to enhance the police image and instill a respect for law and order.
Notifies fire fighting
units when fires are observed and responds to dispatches of fires and fire
alarms; investigates the causes of fires with officials of the fire
department.
Investigates reports
of explosive devices placed openly or concealed in buildings or vehicles;
identifies potential explosive devices; provides for the safety of the public.
Completes all required
records and reports of activities; services warrants; testifies as a witness
in court cases.
Remains obedient and
responsive to all verbal and written orders issued by superiors and to all
work assignments transmitted to them by authorized persons.
Performs such other
duties as may be required by State law, or Department rule, or as may be
assigned by a superior officer.
Operates communication
equipment when necessary; takes and transmits to the appropriate police
officer all citizen complaint calls received.
Respond to all
emergencies during duty shift. Assess situation, provide required assistance,
such as use of Automated External Defibrillators and other required devices.
Requirements:
High school diploma or
GED . Must be 21 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen. Must have a valid
Illinois driver's license.
Prior police
employment and certification by the Illinois Local Governmental Law
Enforcement Officer's Training Board.
Acquire and maintain
other than full access LEADS and AED/CPR certification.
Availability and
ability to work varying shift assignments.
Ability to use good
discretion and deal courteously but firmly with general public.
Must have English
speaking, reading and writing skills.
Ability to establish
and maintain effective working relationships with staff, fellow workers and
general public.
Desired
Qualifications:
High school diploma or
GED plus a minimum of 60 college credit hours.
Able to respond to an
emergency call and live within a 30-minute driving radius from the College,
under normal traffic conditions.

(English/Spanish).
