Located 22 miles west of Chicago, the Village of Downers was founded by Pierce
Downer in 1832 and covers 13 square miles. This established community of nearly
50,000 residents has convenient access to I-55 and has five interchanges to/from
I-355 as well as three Metra stations to serve commuters. With numerous public

corporate headquarters. As a result, the daytime population increases to

ABOUT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Downers Grove Fire Department (DGFD) is an ISO Class 1 organization which is
made up of a team of dedicated professionals providing a safe environment for
the residents, guests and employees of the Downers Grove community. The DGFD
prides itself on customer service, financial stewardship and innovation. The

The Downers Grove Fire Department is comprised of 70 firefighter/paramedics
operating on 24/48 schedule shifts covering four fire stations. In addition to
fire services, the department provides complete advanced life support (ALS)
emergency medical services, technical rescue and hazardous material services,
fire prevention, and a nationally recognized fire and life safety education
program. The department runs 3 ALS engines, 3 ALS ambulances, 1 ALS ladder
truck, a heavy rescue squad and other vehicles in its fleet ready to assist the
community. The Downers Grove Fire Department is a participating agency in the
Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) and the Combined Agencies Rescue Team

Notice of Job Opportunity
The Village of Downers Grove is accepting applications for the position of
Deputy Fire Chief.
Deputy Chief of Operations is under the direction of the Fire Chief. This
position is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the operations of
the fire department; supervises professional management staff, will assist in
the Accreditation Process, participates in the Duty Chief rotation and performs
related duties as required.
Candidates must have experience in the fire service as a chief officer or
Comprehensive knowledge of current issues in fire management;
Knowledge of building and construction codes;
Ability to organize, direct and control fire and emergency operations under
stressful situations for prolonged periods of time.
Candidates will have an active role on the fireground and must be able to
demonstrate the technical aspects of emergency scene management.
Candidates will be expected to respond to emergencies after hours and will serve
in the Duty Chief rotation.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to work in a collaborative
environment, possess strong problem solving skills, and demonstrate team
leadership. The candidate must exhibit excellent interpersonal and
communications skills and a commitment to high professional standards. The
candidate will promote teamwork and mentor subordinates for success as it
applies to the fire service.
Bachelorís degree in Fire Service or related field.
Five (5) years or more of progressively responsible fire service management
Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal Fire Officer II required, Fire Officer
III or Chief Fire Officer certification desired
Illinois Department of Public Health EMT-B or higher.
Valid Illinois Driver's License - class B non CDL minimum
