City of Des Plaines, IL, 56,945 pop., covering 15.85 sq. miles, seeks candidates for position of Police Patrol Officer. Des Plaines is located 17 miles from the Chicago Loop and five minutes from O’Hare International Airport.

 

Successful candidates must be self-motivated individuals who are problem solvers and possess logical reasoning skills, decision making skills, self confidence, sensitivity to others, stress tolerance, non-verbal communication, positive motivation, and behavioral flexibility.  Candidates should possess the verbal and written skills necessary to record facts and prepare reports that document incidents and activities. 

 

 

Salary Range:

 

$56,289 - $78,500

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Applicants must possess, at minimum, a high school diploma or GED equivalent, plus the following:

  • 60 college credit hours from a college or university accredited by the North Central Association Colleges and Schools.

  • OR, a combination of the following life experience qualifications:

  • Each year of certified full-time law enforcement related experience is equivalent to 30 college credit hours.

  • Each year of active military service is equivalent to 30 college credit hours.

 

AGE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Applicants must be at 21 to under 35 years of age on the date of written examination (9/19/09), unless otherwise exempted by statute. 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Every applicant must be of good moral character, of temperate habits, of sound health and must be physically able to perform the duties of the position applied.

  • No felony convictions or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions (or an offense with substantially the same elements) identified by the State of Illinois (65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6(j)). 

  • At the time of the written examination, all applicants must be a United States citizen.

  • At the time of appointment, a Police Patrol Officer candidate must possess a valid driver’s license.

  • Attend the orientation and written exam on Saturday, September 19 at 8:30am at Maine West High School (1755 S Wolf Rd, Des Plaines, IL 60018).
