Testing Process

In 2006 the Merit Commission is instituting a new testing process, this will expedite the Telecommunication application and testing process.  There may be minor adjustments to the process as time goes on.  We thank you for your participation.

The following segments are only scheduled after a completed application and all required attachments have been turned in.  Applicants will be notified of the test dates, which will be administered approximately once a month, at the discretion of the Merit Commission.

Segment #1

The written test component must be passed in order to progress in the testing process.  This is a series of written tests developed by Profile Evaluations Inc. to measure an individuals skills and potential as a telecommunicator.

Segment #2

CritiCall Testing

CritiCall is a pass/fail based practical exam, measuring an individual’s capability and potential in an emergency communication-dispatch-computer, environment.  These tests will take approximately 2 hours, and be held at the City of DeKalb at 223 So. 4th Street.

Segment #1 and #2 may be reversed in order.  In other words Segment #2 may be given first as scheduling and Merit Commission determines.

Segment #3

If a candidate successfully complete Segment #1 and #2, they will be scheduled for Segment #3 which is oral interviews by the Merit Commission.

Those individuals, who successfully pass all three segments, will be certified by the Merit Commission to be on the eligibility list for Deputy Sheriff assigned to Communications.  The Sheriff will make selection from that list as needed after the individual has passed a rigorous background investigation and psychological review.
