Fire Rescue Department Recruitment and Selection

 

 

Introduction

 

The City of Crystal Lake, Illinois, population 39,788, a growing community 50 miles northwest of Chicago, seeks individuals with a high degree of personal and professional integrity to participate in a competitive process to establish an eligibility list for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. Testing for this position occurs as needed.

 

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department protects more than 60,000 people in a 50 square mile area. The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department's mission is to safeguard the lives and property of the citizens of Crystal Lake and surrounding areas. This is accomplished by providing professional, quality fire prevention and public education programs as well as effective and efficient fire suppression,

emergency medical, rescue and other emergency services.

 

Over the past two decades, the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department has experienced extensive growth. Today, the Department has three fire stations in operation. Currently, the department has authorized strength of 49 full-time personnel and 25 paid on premise personnel. The department is manned 24 hours per day and operates 3 engines, 3 paramedic ambulances, and 1 shift commander vehicle.

 


 

Eligibility Requirements

 

The Crystal Lake Board of Fire and Police Commissioners is charged with the appointment of all full-time Firefighter/Paramedics. The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners will hold examinations for qualified persons to establish an eligibility list from which full-time Firefighter/Paramedic vacancies will be filled. To be considered for employment, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalent (GED)

  • U.S. Citizen

  • Possess valid driver's license which must be shown as identification at all phases of testing

  • Must be 21 years of age or over and under 35 years of age by March 17, 2006 except as provided by state statute

  • Attend orientation (no exceptions) and all phases of testing

  • Good character and meeting all requirements of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners and State of Illinois

  • Must hold Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) EMT-Basic to test and hold IDPH EMT-PARAMEDIC License by date of hire. Must retain IDPH EMT-PARAMEDIC License for continued employment

  • Meet Visual Acuity Standard of 20/100 in each eye uncorrected, correctable to less than 20/40 and able to meet vision standards (NFPA 1582)

  • Must establish residency of 15 nautical miles from the municipal complex within 15 months from date of appointment

Applicants must attend orientation and pass and/or successfully complete written test, physical ability test, interview, polygraph test, background investigation and a pre-employment, post-offer psychological assessment and physical examination.

Part-time Paid on Premise Opportunities

 

The City of Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department employs part-time Paid on Premise firefighter/paramedics as well as full-time staff. To be considered for employment, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalent (GED)

  • U.S. Citizen

  • Possess valid drivers license which must be shown as identification at all phases of testing

  • Must be 21 years of age or over and under 35 years of age by March 17, 2006, except as otherwise provided by state statute
