The Village of Brookfield is a vibrant, diverse community (est. pop. 20,000) located 13 miles west of downtown Chicago. Brookfield is well positioned for convenient access to and from the City of Chicago and the Chicago Region. Several major expressways are located within close proximity. Three Metra train stations along the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe railway and Pace bus routes provide travel from Aurora on the west to the City of Chicago on the east. Brookfield is a well-know community, particularly because it is home to the world famous Brookfield Zoo. Brookfield is an established inner-ring, serene suburb of Chicago 3.1 mile in size. The Village is a stable middle-class community that is family oriented, with good schools, an excellent library, low taxes, extensive parks and recreation programs.

The Village of Brookfield is a non-home rule municipality that operates with a Manager form of government and history of professional management dating back to 1951. The Village Board consists of a President and six Trustees elected at large to serve staggered four-year terms. The Chief is appointed by the Village Manager with approval of the Village Board and reports to the Village Manager. The Police Department has a budget of approx. $4 million and a staffing level of 35 full time sworn officers, 7 auxiliaries, and 24 civilians including records, dispatch and crossing guards. The patrol officers, Sergeants, and dispatchers are covered by the F.O.P bargaining unit. All positions with the exception of the Deputy Police Chief are appointed by the Fire & Police Commission.

The Village is seeking an experienced, proactive law enforcement professional with outstanding leadership and administrative skills who is committed to community service, to fill the position of Police Chief.

The ideal candidate:

Will possess exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
Must possess the ability to develop a good working relationship with other area law enforcement agencies, and the community
Must have a minimum of 10 years progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including 5 years of supervisory and/or management experience
Collective bargaining experience is preferred

Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree is required
Criminal Justice or Police Administration preferred
Advanced police leadership training programs such as FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, or Northwestern Center for Public Safety School of Staff and Command is required
Masters Degree preferred
